Price named USA South Athlete of the Week

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Senior Jen Price was recognized a one of the USA South Athletes of the Week on Monday.

Price was named Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week.

In two games this week, the San Ramon, Calif., native totaled 12 ground balls, eight caused turnovers and five draw controls to go with four goals and four assists.

In Saturday's 15-6 win over LaGrange, Price had a game-high four caused turnovers and scored four goals. She also had an assist, three ground balls and two draw controls.

In Sunday's 19-6 loss to Sewanee, Price had a game-high nine ground balls and four caused turnovers to go with three assists and three draw controls.

BASEBALL 

Baseball Player of the Week
Alex Rodriguez, Methodist - The senior outfielder from Walkersville, Maryland went a combined 13-for-23 (.565) with a .783 slugging percentage, eight runs scored, eight RBI, two doubles, one home run and one stolen base as the Monarchs posted a 3-2 record last week. In a 7-6 loss to USA South foe LaGrange, Rodriguez was 1-for-4 with two runs scored. In a 7-6 loss to Randolph-Macon, Rodriguez was 3-for-5 with two RBI, one run scored and one stolen base. Finally, in a three-game sweep of USA South rival Huntingdon, Rodriguez was a combined 9-for-14 with six RBI, five runs scored, two doubles and one home run. Baseball Pitcher of the Week
Jake Perkins, Ferrum - The senior from Appomattox, Virginia earned a complete-game victory in a 3-1 win over USA South rival Averett in his only appearance on the mound for the Panthers last week. Perkins allowed just one unearned run on five hits with one walk and nine strikeouts. Also Nominated: Seth Beard, Methodist; Joshua Hatcher, Averett; Adam Murray, Greensboro; Blake Schuck, LaGrange.

Baseball Rookie of the Week
Lucas Stevers, Ferrum - The freshman from Giles, Virginia went a combined 11-for-17 (.647) with a .941 slugging percentage, five runs scored, four RBI, two doubles and one home run as the Panthers posted a 4-0 record last week. In a 13-11 win over Eastern Mennonite, Stevers was 4-for-5 with three RBI and one run scored on a home run. In a three-game sweep of USA South foe Averett, Stevers was a combined 7-for-12 with four runs scored, one run batted in and two doubles. Also Nominated: None.

Baseball Rookie Pitcher of the Week
Matt Reitz, Covenant - The Jacksonville, Florida freshman earned a win in a 5-2 victory over USA South foe Piedmont in his only appearance last week for the Scots. Reitz earned the start and tossed seven innings, allowing two runs on three hits with zero walks and six strikeouts. Also Nominated: Chris Campbell, Averett; Hunter Peck, Ferrum.

 

WOMEN'S LACROSSE

Lacrosse Player of the Week
Kirstin Norris, Greensboro - The Bushwood, Maryland senior midfielder totaled 16 points on 13 goals and three assists with 11 ground balls, six caused turnovers and one draw control in a 2-0 week for the Pride. In a 14-12 win at USA South foe Piedmont, Norris tallied six goals with one assist, six ground balls, five caused turnovers and one draw control. In a 12-7 victory over Berry, Norris scored seven goals with two assists, five ground balls and one caused turnover. Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week
Jen Price, Huntingdon - The San Ramon, California senior midfielder totaled 12 ground balls, eight caused turnovers and five draw controls to go along with four goals and four assists as the Hawks posted a 1-1 record last week. In a 15-6 victory over USA South foe LaGrange, Price had a game-high four caused turnovers along with four goals, one assist, three ground balls and two draw controls. In a 19-6 loss to Sewanee, Price grabbed game-highs of nine ground balls and four caused turnovers to go along with three assists and three draw controls. Also Nominated: Kallie Brook, LaGrange; Kaleigh Hemstock, Greensboro.

Lacrosse Rookie of the Week
Julie Capretti, Meredith - The Ashburn, Virginia freshman attacker tallied three points on two goals and one assist with one ground ball and one draw control in a 20-7 victory over USA South foe Ferrum. Also Nominated: Jade Paul, Huntingdon.

Softball Player of the Week
Shannon Schmitt, Covenant - The sophomore catcher from Clermont, Florida went a combined 10-for-16 (.625) with a 1.000 slugging percentage, seven RBI, four runs scored, three doubles, one home run and one walk as the Scots posted a 3-3 record last week. In two losses to nationally-ranked Birmingham Southern, Schmitt was a combined 1-for-4. In a doubleheader sweep of USA South foe LaGrange, Schmitt was a combined 4-for-6 with two runs scored and one double. Finally, in a doubleheader split with USA South rival Huntingdon, Schmitt was a combined 5-for-6 with seven RBI, three runs scored, one double and one home run. Softball Pitcher of the Week
Sarah Walker, Piedmont - The Lawrenceville, Georgia junior earned a 1-1 record with two saves in four appearances, one start, in the circle for the Lions last week versus USA South competition. In 15.1 innings pitched, Walker posted a 0.46 ERA and allowed two runs, only one of which was earned, on nine hits with one walk and 13 strikeouts. In a doubleheader sweep of LaGrange, Walker earned a two-inning save in the first game and collected a victory in the second game by tossing six innings and allowing just one run. In a doubleheader split with Huntingdon, Walker was the tough-luck loser in the first game as she tossed a complete game and allowed just one unearned run with eight strikeouts in a 1-0 loss before grabbing a save in game two. Kristyn Owen, Averett - The freshman designated player from Skipwith, Virginia went a combined 7-for-10 (.700) with a 1.700 slugging percentage, six RBI, four runs scored, one double and three home runs as the Cougars posted a 2-2 record last week versus USA South competition. In a doubleheader split with William Peace, Owen was a combined 2-for-3 with one double. In a doubleheader split with Meredith, Owen was a combined 5-for-7 with six RBI, four runs scored and three home runs. Also Nominated: Hannah Hoban, Piedmont; Alexus Murray, Maryville; Cheyenne Strickland, Ferrum.

Softball Rookie Pitcher of the Week
Casey Joliff, Maryville - The freshman from St. Johns, Florida earned a 3-0 record with one save in five appearances, one start, in the circle for the Scots last week. In 18.2 innings pitched, Joliff posted a 1.50 ERA and allowed five runs, four of which were earned, on 15 hits with two walks and 17 strikeouts. In her lone start of the week, a 13-4, five-inning, win over Agnes Scott, Joliff tossed the first 4.2 innings and did not allow a run on one hit with one walk and five strikeouts. In a doubleheader sweep of USA South foe Meredith, Joliff earned a game one victory by tossing 4.1 innings of one-run relief. In a doubleheader sweep of USA South rival William Peace, Joliff collected a victory and a save. Also Nominated: Carsyn Stone, Covenant; Melissa Eckman, Piedmont; Maddy Wetherholt, Greensboro.

 

MEN'S TENNIS

Men's Tennis Player of the Week
Sebastian Sikh, N.C. Wesleyan - The sophomore from Eskilstuna, Sweden earned a victory at both the number-one singles and doubles positions last week for the Bishops versus USA South foe Methodist. In singles, Sikh earned a straight-set win over Methodist's R.J. Clement who was undefeated in Conference play prior to the match. In doubles action, Sikh teamed with Peter Hviid to earn the victory. Men's Tennis Rookie of the Week
Oliver Lindqvist, Averett - The freshman from Stockholm, Sweden earned a 1-0 record at the number-one singles position and a 2-0 mark at the top doubles spot last week for the Cougars versus USA South competition. In singles, Lindqvist earned a victory over an opponent from William Peace. In doubles, Lindqvist teamed with James Wright to collect wins over opposition from William Peace and Greensboro. Also Nominated: Harrison LaBollita, Piedmont; Ioannis Brokakis, N.C. Wesleyan.

 

WOMEN'S TENNIS

Women's Tennis Player of the Week
Nicole Parrish, Piedmont - The senior from Baldwin, Georgia earned a 2-0 record at both the number-one singles and doubles positions last week for the Lions versus USA South competition. In singles, Parrish's victories came versus LaGrange and Huntingdon. In doubles, she teamed with Amanda Blackwell to collect the two wins. Also Nominated: Heidi Sarkkinen, Averett; Ali Herring, LaGrange; Claire Luger, Covenant; Isabella Graf, Methodist; Ran Zhang, Meredith.

Women's Tennis Rookie of the Week
Heidi Sarkkinen, Averett - The freshman from Oulu, Finland earned a 2-0 record at both the number-one singles and doubles positions last week for the Cougars versus USA South competition. In singles, Sarkkinen's victories came versus Greensboro and William Peace. In doubles, she teamed with Hannah Mattson to collect the two wins.
