Catala and Hunt named USA South Athletes of the Week

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Huntingdon's Dusty Catala and Madison Hunt were named USA South Athletic Conference Athletes of the Week on Monday.
Catala was named Women's Tennis Rookie of the Week for the second time this spring while Hunt was named Softball Rookie Pitcher of the Week.
Hunt, a native of Crossville, Ala., turned in a 3-0 record while making four appearances this past week. For the week, the freshman threw 22.1 innings, with a 1.25 ERA and allowed seven runs, four earned, 16 hits and finished with six strikeouts.
Making her first start of the season against 14th-ranked NAIA Martin Methodist, Hunt pitched a complete game shutout and recorded three strikeouts while allowing three hits.
In Game 1 against conference opponent Covenant, Hunt pitched the final 1 1/3 innings and finished with one strikeout and allowed no hits. In Game 2, the Lady Hawks took an 8-4 win behind Hunts pitching. Hunt pitched all seven innings while giving up four runs off seven hits. Hunt also had one RBI off one hit in the win.
Hunt made her final appearance of the week in a 6-3 win over Maryville in the second game of Sunday's doubleheader. Hunt had two strikeouts while allowing one earned run and six hits.
The softball team hosts Birmingham Southern on Tuesday for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
Catala, a native from LaBelle, Fla., finished her weekend with a 2-0 record at No. 1 singles and a 1-1 record at No.1 and No. 2 doubles.
Against Millsaps, the freshman fell 8-2 in the No. 2 doubles spot but rebounded with a 7-5, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles.
In Saturday's 9-0 win over conference rival Maryville, Catala teamed with Mariah Bastos at No. 1 doubles and took a comfortable 8-0 win. In singles, she played in the No. 1 spot and cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 victory.
The Lady Hawks host LaGrange on Wednesday for a 1:30 p.m. matchup.

Baseball Player of the Week
Tony Sanchez, N.C. Wesleyan - The senior first baseman from Raleigh, North Carolina went a combined 12-for-26 (.462) with a .556 on-base percentage and a .846 slugging percentage to go along with ten runs scored, ten RBI, two doubles, one triple, two home runs, eight walks, two sacrifice flies and one stolen base as the Bishops notched a 5-3 week. In a 14-7 loss to Mt. Aloysius, Sanchez reached base all four times as he was 1-for-1 with three walks and one run scored. In a doubleheader split with Penn College, Sanchez was a combined 2-for-7 with three runs scored, one run batted in, one double, two walks and one sacrifice fly. In a 17-9 victory over Penn St.-Berks, Sanchez was 2-for-2 with three runs scored, four RBI, one double, one home run, one walk and one sacrifice fly. In a three-game sweep of USA South foe Covenant, Sanchez was a combined 5-for-12 with two runs scored, four RBI, one home run, one walk and one stolen base. Finally, in a 7-6 loss to Stevenson, Sanchez was 2-for-4 with one run scored, one run batted in, one triple and one walk. Ryan Grant, N.C. Wesleyan - The senior from Goldsboro, North Carolina earned a complete-game shutout victory over USA South foe Covenant, a 6-0 win, in his only appearance on the mound last week for the Bishops. Grant allowed just five hits and two walks while striking out ten batters. Baseball Rookie of the Week
Wes Snyder, Piedmont - The freshman outfielder from Statham, Georgia went a combined 4-for-8 (.500) with a .556 on-base percentage and an .750 slugging percentage to go along with three runs scored, two doubles, one walk and two stolen bases as the Lions dropped two out of three games to number-one ranked Emory in the team's only games last week. Baseball Rookie Pitcher of the Week
Anthony Rodriguez, Maryville - The freshman from Miramar, Florida picked up a win in a 7-3 victory over USA South foe Averett in his only appearance on the mound for the Scots last week. Rodriguez tossed six innings and allowed three runs on two hits with five walks and five strikeouts. Also Nominated: Alex Ansted, Averett; Michael Smith, N.C. Wesleyan.

Softball Player of the Week
Heather McLean, William Peace - The junior infielder from Willow Springs, North Carolina went a combined 11-for-20 (.550) with a .524 on-base percentage and a 1.000 slugging percentage to go along with six runs scored, ten RBI, three doubles, two home runs and one sacrifice fly as the Pacers earned a 3-3 record last week. In two losses to sixth-ranked Virginia Wesleyan, McLean was just one of two Pacers to record a hit. In a doubleheader sweep of USA South foe Mary Baldwin, McLean was a combined 5-for-8 with three runs scored, two RBI and two doubles. Finally, in a doubleheader split with USA South rival Ferrum, McLean was a combined 5-for-7 with three runs scored, eight RBI, one double, two home runs and one sacrifice fly. Softball Pitcher of the Week
Nicole Blackburn, Maryville - The sophomore from Knoxville, Tennessee earned two complete-game shutout victories in three appearances last week for the Scots versus USA South competition. Blackburn tossed a total of 14.0 shutout innings while allowing 12 hits and two walks with ten strikeouts. In a 9-0, five-inning, victory over LaGrange, Blackburn allowed four hits without a walk and five strikeouts. In a 2-0 win over Huntingdon, Blackburn allowed seven hits and two walks with four strikeouts. In a 6-3 loss to Huntingdon, Blackburn came on in relief to pitch two scoreless innings, allowing one hit with one strikeout. Also Nominated: Taylor Bailey, Averett; Maddy Wetherholt, Greensboro.

Aly Snider, Maryville - The freshman catcher from Hampshire, Illinois went a combined 8-for-12 (.667) with a .692 on-base percentage and a 1.083 slugging percentage to go along with four runs scored, six RBI, two doubles, one home run and one walk as the Scots earned a 2-2 record last week versus USA South competition. In a doubleheader split with LaGrange, Snider was a combined 4-for-7 with three runs scored, three RBI, one double, one home run and one walk. In a doubleheader split with Huntingdon, Snider was a combined 4-for-7 with one run scored, three RBI and one double. Softball Rookie Pitcher of the Week
Madison Hunt, Huntingdon - The freshman from Crossville, Alabama earned a 3-0 record in four appearances, three complete-game starts, last week for the Hawks. Hunt tossed a total of 22.1 innings and posted a 1.25 ERA while allowing seven runs, four of which were earned, on 16 hits with zero walks and six strikeouts. In a 2-0 victory over Martin Methodist, Hunt earned a complete-game shutout win by allowing three hits with three strikeouts. In a 10-3 loss to USA South foe Covenant, Hunt earned a no-decision as she came on in relief to toss 1.1 perfect innings with one strikeout. In an 8-4 win over Covenant, Hunt went the distance and allowed four runs, three of which were earned, on seven hits. Finally, in a 6-3 win over USA South rival Maryville, Hunt again tossed seven innings and allowed three runs, only one of which was earned, on six hits with two strikeouts. Lacrosse Player of the Week
Carlee Joseph, Meredith - The Hollywood, Maryland junior attacker totaled 19 points on 15 goals and four assists in a 3-0 week for the Avenging Angels. She also added eight ground balls, seven draw controls and three caused turnovers. In a 17-7 win over Sewanee, Joseph notched seven goals and one assist to go along with five ground balls, three draw controls and two caused turnovers. In a 23-5 victory over Albion, Joseph totaled two goals, one assist, four draw controls, three ground balls and one caused turnover. Finally, in a 20-7 win over Berry, Joseph scored six times with two assists. Also Nominated: Jade Paul, Huntingdon; Natalie Ritchey, Greensboro; Jenna Smith, Piedmont.

Holly Hite, Meredith - The Apex, North Carolina sophomore midfielder totaled 28 draw controls, ten ground balls and four caused turnovers in a 3-0 week for the Avenging Angels. She also added 14 points on nine goals and five assists. In a 17-7 win over Sewanee, Hite notched nine draw controls, four ground balls and one caused turnover with one goal and two assists. In a 23-5 victory over Albion, Hite totaled a career-high 11 draw controls with three ground balls, one caused turnover, three goals and two assists. Finally, in a 20-7 win over Berry, Hite grabbed eight draw controls, three ground balls and two caused turnovers with one assist and a career-high five goals. Peyton Joyce, Greensboro - The Greensboro, North Carolina freshman midfielder tallied ten points on seven goals and three assists with four ground balls, three draw controls and one caused turnover in a 2-0 week for the Pride. In a 14-12 win over Virginia Wesleyan, Joyce notched six goals and one assist with two draw controls and one caused turnover. In a 19-1 victory over Hollins, Joyce totaled one goal, two assists, four ground balls and one draw control. Men's Tennis Player of the Week
Ioannis Brokakis, N.C. Wesleyan - The sophomore from Heraklion, Greece earned a 3-1 singles record and a 4-0 mark at the number-one doubles spot last week for the Bishops. In singles play, at the number-one position, Brokakis was 2-0, defeating opponents from St. John Fisher and Mount Union. He was 1-1 at the number-two position with his lone victory over an opponent from USA South foe Methodist. In doubles, Brokakis teamed with three different Bishops to gain wins over St. John Fisher, Wilkes, Methodist and Mount Union. David Appelqvist, N.C. Wesleyan - The freshman from Motala, Sweden earned a 3-0 singles record and a 3-0 mark at the number-two doubles spot last week for the Bishops. In singles play, at the number-two position, Appelqvist was 1-0, defeating an opponent from Mount Union. He was 2-0 at the number-four position with wins over Wilkes and USA South foe Methodist. In doubles, Appelqvist teamed with David Chang for the three victories. Also Nominated: Jackson Hill, Piedmont; Caius Blomqvist, Averett; Will Thompson, LaGrange.

Women's Tennis Player of the Week
Jenna Landis, Methodist - The sophomore from Elkhart, Indiana earned a 3-1 singles record and a 2-1 mark at the number-one doubles spot last week for the Monarchs. In singles play, at the number-one position, Landis was 1-0, defeating an opponent from Morningside. She was 2-1 at the number-two position with wins over Oglethorpe and Haverford. In doubles, Landis teamed with Sam Munze to collect wins over regionally-ranked Oglethorpe as well as Haverford. Also Nominated: Deanna Andrews, Salem; Josie Waddell, Huntingdon.
Women's Tennis Rookie of the Week
Dusty Catala, Huntingdon - The freshman from LaBelle, Florida earned a 2-0 record at number-one singles and a 1-1 doubles mark last week for the Hawks. Catala earned her singles wins over opponents from Millsaps and USA South foe Maryville. In doubles, Catala teamed with Mariah Bastos and fell at the number-two spot to Millsaps before gaining a win at the number-one spot over Maryville.
