Pair of Hawks named USA South Rookies of the Week

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Freshmen Maddy Morrison and Wes Powell were recognized by the USA South Athletic Conference on Monday.

Morrison was named Women's Lacrosse Rookie of the Week for her performance against LaGrange on Saturday while Powell was named Baseball Rookie of the Week.

In the Lady Hawks only game of the week, Morrison scored five goals and had four draw controls in a 15-5 win over the Panthers. The five goals tied a career-high for the Canton, Ga. native.

Powell turned in a solid performance this past week while the Hawks posted a 2-2 record. The Cantonment, Fla. native registered six hits, scored three runs and stole three bases.

Against Belhaven on Tuesday, the shortstop had one hit and one run. In Friday's conference game against Methodist, he scored two runs, had two hits and one RBI. In Saturday's doubleheader against Methodist, he totaled three hits.

BASEBALL

Baseball Player of the Week
Lucas Scott, Methodist - The senior infielder from Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina went a combined 7-for-13 (.538) with a .500 on-base percentage and a 1.077 slugging percentage to go along with three runs scored, nine RBI, one double, two home runs and one sacrifice fly as the Monarchs dropped two of three games to USA South foe Huntingdon. Also Nominated: Hunter Ashworth, Averett; Caleb Bloye, Covenant; Tyler Burdette, Piedmont; Joseph Calvert, Huntingdon; Nick Cole, William Peace; Bryce Redaja, Maryville; Jacob Rodriguez, Greensboro.

Baseball Pitcher of the Week
Chase Roupp, William Peace - The senior from Rocky Mount, North Carolina earned a victory over USA South foe Greensboro, a 3-2 win, in his only appearance on the mound last week for the Pacers. Roupp tossed seven scoreless innings and allowed five hits with two walks and five strikeouts. Also Nominated: Matt Tuggle, Averett; Zach McGrady, Huntingdon.

Baseball Rookie of the Week
Wes Powell, Huntingdon - The freshman infielder from Cantonment, Florida went a combined 6-for-13 (.462) with a .533 on-base percentage and a .462 slugging percentage to go along with three runs scored, one run batted in, one walk and three stolen bases in a 2-2 week for the Hawks. In a 20-4 loss to Belhaven, Powell was 1-for-2 with a run scored and a walk. In taking two of three games from USA South foe Methodist, Powell was a combined 5-for-11 with two runs scored, one run batted in and three stolen bases. Also Nominated: Adam George, Averett; Jacob Rodriguez, Greensboro.

Baseball Rookie Pitcher of the Week
Sam Carpenter, Piedmont - The freshman from Gainesville, Georgia picked up a no-decision in a 3-2 victory over USA South foe Covenant in his only appearance on the mound for the Lions last week. Carpenter started and pitched eight innings, allowing two runs, only one of which was earned, on six hits with zero walks and five strikeouts. Also Nominated: Anthony Rodriguez, Maryville; Ross Skipper, Covenant; Sawyer Smith, Averett.

 

WOMEN'S LACROSSE

Lacrosse Player of the Week
Kaelyn Holland, Methodist - The Lorton, Virginia sophomore midfielder totaled seven points on three goals and four assists in a 15-7 victory over USA South foe Piedmont in the team's only action last week. She also added two ground balls and one draw control in the win. Also Nominated: Rowan Bumpass, Piedmont; Molly Miller, Meredith; Jade Paul, Huntingdon.

Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week
Julianna Surgent, Piedmont - The Huntingtown, Maryland senior midfielder totaled ten draw controls, eight caused turnovers, seven ground balls and two goals in a 1-1 week for the Lions versus USA South competition. In a 17-6 win over LaGrange, Surgent notched six draw controls, four ground balls and four caused turnovers with two goals. In a 15-7 loss to Meredith, Surgent totaled four draw controls, four caused turnovers and three ground balls. Also Nominated: Sarah Ewin, Methodist; Victoria Krupa, Meredith.

Lacrosse Rookie of the Week
Maddy Morrison, Huntingdon - The Canton, Georgia freshman attacker tallied five goals with four draw controls, one ground ball and one caused turnover in a 15-5 victory over USA South foe LaGrange in the team's only game last week. Also Nominated: Rowan Bumpass, Piedmont; Monti Hendrix, Methodist; Julie-Anne Pretty, Meredith.

 

MEN'S TENNIS

Men's Tennis Player of the Week
Sebastian Sikh, N.C. Wesleyan - The junior from Eskilstuna, Sweden earned 2-0 record at both number-one singles and doubles last week for the Bishops versus USA South competition. In singles play, Sikh earned wins over opponents from Greensboro and Averett. In doubles, Sikh teamed with Ioannis Brokakis to collect the victories. Also Nominated: Chris Cox, Covenant; Harrison LaBollita, Piedmont; James Wright, Averett; R.J. Clement, Methodist.

Men's Tennis Rookie of the Week
David Appelqvist, N.C. Wesleyan - The freshman from Motala, Sweden earned a 2-0 singles and doubles record last week for the Bishops versus USA South competition. In singles play, at the number-four position, Appelqvist grabbed wins over opponents from Greensboro and Averett. In doubles, at the number-three position, Appelqvist teamed with J.D. Telles, to gain the two victories. Also Nominated: Micah Fox, Covenant; Lauri Soome, Averett.

 

WOMEN'S TENNIS

Women's Tennis Player of the Week
Heidi Sarkkinen, Averett - The sophomore from Oulu, Finland earned a 3-0 record at number-one singles and a 2-1 mark at the top doubles positions last week for the Cougars versus USA South competition. In singles play, Sarkkinen earned wins over opponents from the top-three teams in the Conference's East Division, Methodist, N.C. Wesleyan and Meredith. In doubles, Sarkkinen teamed with Hannah Mattson to collect wins over N.C. Wesleyan and Meredith. Also Nominated: Maddie Hoffman, Agnes Scott; Heather Tabor, Huntingdon; Aly Hall, Covenant; Jenna Landis, Methodist.

Women's Tennis Rookie of the Week
Esther Eddy, Covenant - The freshman from Jacksonville, Florida earned a 3-0 record at number-four singles and a 2-1 doubles mark at the number-one position last week for the Scots versus USA South competition. In singles play, Eddy earned wins over opponents from Maryville, Huntingdon and LaGrange. In doubles, Eddy teamed with Aly Hall to collect victories over Maryville and Huntingdon. Also Nominated: Lizzy Engsberg, Agnes Scott; Clayton Waring, Huntingdon; Allison Himes, Methodist.
