Three Hawks recognized as USA South Athletes of the Week

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Three Huntingdon Hawks were named USA South Athletic Conference Athletes of the Week on Monday.

Trey Hayes was named the Defensive Player of the Week for football, Amy Tyma was named the Rookie of the Week for volleyball and Kebba Jeng was named the Rookie of the Week for men's soccer.

This is the first time each player has been recognized this season.

Hayes, a junior linebacker, led the Hawks with 10 tackles, a sack and a tackle for loss in Saturday's 28-16 win over Maryville College. As Huntingdon picked up its ninth straight win against Maryville, Hayes and the Huntingdon defense held the Scots to five yards or less on six of their 12 possessions and four of the first five possessions of the game.

For the season, Hayes leads the Hawks with 58 tackles, four tackles for loss, two sacks, an interception and two fumble recoveries.

Tyma's selection as Rookie of the Week is just the second time the USA South has recognized a Huntingdon volleyball player as an Athlete of the Week. Former volleyball player Audrianna Hargitt was first Huntingdon volleyball player to earn Athlete of the Week recognition.

Tyma totaled 38 kills, 49 digs, six blocks and five aces in three wins last week. In a 25-20, 25-23, 25-21 win over Berea, Tyma had nine kills, nine digs, two blocks and two aces. The freshman recorded a career-high 21 kills and 27 digs to go with two blocks and three aces in a 14-25, 25-20, 34-32, 19-25, 15-11 win over Brevard College. In the final match of the week, a continuation of a postponed match with Brevard, Tyma had eight kills, 13 digs and two blocks in a 25-15, 25-12, 25-21 win.

For the seasons, Tyma is second on Huntingdon's team with 219 kills, 223 digs and 32 aces and also has 31 blocks.

Jeng earned Rookie of the Week recognition after helping the men's soccer team win its first game of the season with an 8-0 victory over Berea College. Jeng scored one goal in a 3-1 loss to Ferrum before following up with three goals and an assist against Berea.

For the season, the freshman leads the Hawks with five goals and is tied for third on the team with one assist.
