Soccer, volleyball and cross country set to begin preseason practice

MONTGOMERY, Ala.  – Huntingdon's soccer, volleyball and cross country coaches welcomed 93 student-athletes to campus on Wednesday for the start of preseason practice.

Practice for each team begins on Thursday. Each team will have 15 days before the first competition.

 

Women's Soccer 

Third-year head coach Matt Gill and first-year assistant coach Clifford Jordan have 30 players ready for the first day of practice. Among the group are 25 returning players and five first-year players.

The Lady Hawks open the season on Aug, 31 in Sewanee, Tenn., against Berry College.

 

Men's Soccer 

Fourth-year head coach Matt Cooper and assistant coach Mark Ward will be working with 26 players during preseason camp. The squad features 16 returning players and 10 newcomers.

Men's soccer will host Huntingdon's first home event of the season in any sport. The Hawks will play Belhaven in the first soccer game in the new Samford Complex on Aug. 31.

 

Volleyball

A total of 30 players are set to take the court for the start of preseason volleyball practice. Fourth-year head coach Latonia Brady and assistant coach Mary Willis return 16 players from last season to go with 14 newcomers. The Hawks open the season in Memphis, Tenn., on Aug. 31 in the Rhodes Invitational.

 

Men's and Women's Cross Country

This will be the second season of competition for the men's and women's cross country program after a four-year hiatus. Under first-year head coach Ian Layne, the Hawks will open the season in the JSU Strut's Season Opener on Aug. 31.

Huntingdon will host the first home meet in program history this season. The Huntingdon Invitational is set for Sept. 8.
