Barker chosen as USA South Men’s Basketball Rookie of the Week

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Huntingdon freshman B.J. Barker was named USA South Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week on Monday.

Barker was recognized for his performance in a 70-55 win over Birmingham-Southern, a 68-67 win over Alvernia and a 79-52 loss to 18th-ranked Christopher Newport. Barker averaged 13.7 points, 2.3 rebounds, one assist, one steal and made 8-of-11 free throws in the three games.

Against Birmingham-Southern, Barker scored 10 points, had one rebound and a steal as the Hawks beat the Panthers for the second time this season and the fourth time in the past five meetings.         

Barker scored a season-high 21 points, grabbed five rebounds and had two assists and one steal in the win over Alvernia. Trailing by one point with six seconds to play, Barker sank two free throws for the one-point victory.

In the loss to Christopher Newport, Barker finished with 10 points, one rebound and one assist.

For the season, Barker has appeared in nine of the Hawks' 10 games, leads the team with an 80-percent free-throw average (28-of-35), is second on the team with 10.8 points per game, third with nine assists and tied for third with seven steals.
