Mathers and Cox earn USA South recognition

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Two Huntingdon golfers were recognized with the release of the USA South Athletic Conference Golfer of the Week awards on Wednesday.

Senior Drew Mathers was named Golfer of the Week for men's golf and freshman Emma Cox was named Rookie of the Week for Women's Golf.

This is the third time Mathers has received the honor this fall. Cox is the first Huntingdon women's golfer to be recognized with the weekly awards. This is the first season the USA South has sponsored women's golf and just the second weekly awards release for the sport.

Mathers earned the weekly award for his performance in the three-round Gordin Classic. In a field that included the top-eight teams in Division III and a total of 12 nationally ranked teams, Mathers just missed winning his third tournament of the fall. He finished one stroke off the lead and in second with a 9-under-par 207.

Mathers opened the tournament with an 8-under 64 and a 4-under 68 in the first two rounds. The 8-under broke the Hawks' NCAA-era record for strokes under-par that Mathers set a week earlier. The 64 tied the program's NCAA-era record for lowest round. Mathers' 12-under 132 in the first two rounds also set the Hawks' NCAA-era record for 36 holes.

Through nine rounds this fall, Mathers has recorded four of the Hawks' top 15 individual rounds of the NCAA era.

Cox earned Rookie of the Week honors for her play in the MCC Women's Intercollegiate. In just her second collegiate tournament, Cox turned in her best two rounds yet as a Lady Hawk with a two-round 167. She shot an 85 in the first round and an 82 in the final round.
