Mathers and Cox recognized with weekly USA South awards

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Two Huntingdon golfers were among those recognized with the release of the USA South Athletic Conference Golfer of the Week awards on Wednesday.

Senior Drew Mathers was named Golfer of the Week for men's golf and freshman Emma Cox was named Rookie of the Week for women's golf.

This is the fourth time Mathers has received the honor this fall and the second time Cox has been recognized. This is the first season the USA South has sponsored women's golf.

Mathers earned the weekly award for his performance in the Golfweek DIII Fall Invitational. In an 18-team field that included 15 nationally ranked teams, Mathers finished three strokes out of first and placed second with a 9-under-par 204 in the three-round event.

Mathers, the top-ranked golfer in Division III, opened the tournament with a 1-over 72 before finishing with a 3-under 68 in the second round and a 7-under 64 in the final round. The 64 was Mathers' second of the fall and tied the program's NCAA-era record for a single round.

His 132 in the final two rounds tied the Huntingdon NCAA-era record for 36 holes that he set earlier this season and his three-round 204 was two strokes off the Huntingdon NCAA-era record for 54 holes that he set earlier this season.

In 12 rounds this fall, Mathers has seven rounds in the 60s, including five of the top 16 rounds by a Hawk during the NCAA era. In his last 10 tournaments dating to last season, Mathers has five wins, four second-place finishes and one third-place finish.

Cox was named Rookie of the Week for her play in the women's Golfweek DIII Fall Invitational. In her third collegiate tournament, Cox turned in a three-round 261. Cox bounced back from a 93 in the first round to shoot 86 in the second round and 82 in the final round.
