Mellown named USA South Pitcher of the Week

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Senior Carden Mellown was chosen as one of the USA South Athletic Conference Athletes of the Week on Monday.  

Mellown was named Pitcher of the Week for baseball. This is his second recognition of the spring and the third overall recognition for baseball this spring.

Mellown was chosen for his performance in a 4-0 conference win over LaGrange. In the series-opening victory, Mellown pitched a complete-game, two-hit shutout against the Panthers. The win snapped an eight-game winning streak for LaGrange and an 82-game scoring streak.

Of the 30 batters Mellown faced in the game, he struck out three, gave up two hits, issued two walks and forced 10 fly outs and 13 ground outs. Mellown and the Huntingdon defense only allowed five LaGrange batters to reach base in nine innings.

For the season, Mellown is 4-1 in five starts with one complete-game shutout, a 2.38 ERA, 36 strikeouts, 10 walks and 19 hits in 34 innings. Mellown is tied for first in the conference in wins, is third in strikeouts and is fourth in ERA for pitchers with at least 30 innings this season.
