Huntingdon Women's Lacrosse Preseason Report

Montgomery, Ala.-Huntingdon Women's Lacrosse has a full 15 game schedule that opens against non-conference opponent Oglethorpe. 7 freshmen join 15 returning athletes vying for a starting position and hoping to make an impact.

The Hawks ended the 2020-21 season, which was limited due to Covid, 2-6 overall, including 1-4 in conference. The team totalled 76 goals with a 9.6 goals per game average.

Players to Watch

For senior goalie Morgan Coppini, "we hope she breaks the Huntingdon College record for saves," Head Coach Bryan Stanley said. Coppini is currently at 258 saves and the record is 344 saves. 

Senior midfielder Shelby Blair "is a fast and dynamic player that causes turnovers, is a draw magnet, and is an offensive force to be reckoned with," Stanley said.

Senior defender Kyerra Smith, though currently injured, "we hope she is able to return and be a strong foundation on our defense," Stanley said.

"Junior Jordan Alvis is going to have an impact with draw controls and her wicked fast shot," Stanley said.

"Senior defensive leader Kira Fefelov, her leadership on the defense and her ability to transition the ball down the field is great for the team," Stanley said. 

"Our freshmen and sophomore class brings a lot of new and exciting potential," Stanley said. 

Expectations

While the Hawks were voted 7th in the USA South Preseason Poll, the team has expectations to work together and play fast.

"We always hope to play hard and as a unit, and to represent Huntingdon College in efforts to fulfill its mission of Faith, Wisdom, and Service," Stanley said.

"Hawk fans can expect to see a new team with a more progressive vision for the Huntingdon Women's Lacrosse program. Fans should expect a fast moving game with excitement for the team and their fan base," Stanley said.

The Hawks have 8 home games this season starting on February 9th. Non-Conference opponents include Oglethorpe, Brenau, Berry, Warren Wilson, and Sewanee.
