Bio

David Gurganus joined the Huntingdon coaching staff as an assistant men’s basketball coach in 2018 and was promoted to head coach during the spring of 2019.

In his first season as head coach, Gurganus led the Hawks to a 14-14 record, their most wins since the 2005-06 season, and their first appearance in the USA South Athletic Conference Tournament championship game since 2014.

The team produced one All-Conference performer and 13 Academic All-Conference selections.

During his one season as a Huntingdon assistant coach, the Hawks were 13-13 and reached the USA South Tournament for the second time since beginning play in the conference during the 2013-14 season.

Before Huntingdon, Gurganus spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Averett University. During that time, the Cougars won 41 games, won the 2016-17 regular-season conference title and qualified for the USA South Tournament each season.

Gurganus worked under the 2017 USA South Coach of the Year, David Doino, and helped mentor one All-Region Player of the Year, two first-team All-Region performers, two conference Players of the Year and three All-Conference selections.

Before joining the Averett staff, Gurganus began his coaching career during the 2014-15 season at his alma mater, North Carolina Wesleyan.

As a player with the Battling Bishops, Gurganus was a two-time team captain, a two-time USA South sportsmanship award winner and was a member of the team’s 2010-11 conference championship team.

Gurganus earned his bachelor’s degree in exercise science from North Carolina Wesleyan and his MBA from Averett.
