Hawks hammer Maryville 10-0 to advance to GSAC title game

MARYVILLE, Tenn. --- Huntingdon College's baseball team hammered second-seeded Maryville College, 10-0, on Saturday evening eliminating the host team from the Great South Athletic Conference tournament. The Hawks will have to defeat number one seeded Piedmont College twice on Sunday, May 1, for the GSAC championship beginning at 1 p.m. Eastern.

The Hawks' out-hit the Scots 15-6 in the blow-out victory at Maryville's Scotland Yard. GSAC Freshman of the Year Joseph Odom (4-for-5) paced Huntingdon's bats with four total hits including his sixth home-run of the season in the bottom of the 4th inning. Odom also posted a game-high four-RBI's while GSAC All-Conference performer Miles Walding stole his team-high 31st base of the season against the Scots.

Senior Sam Griffin and junior Alan Clemons combined to shut-out Maryville (25-15) on Saturday evening. Griffin (4-4) made his 9th start of the season pitching seven innings while only allowing five hits and striking out three batters. Clemons closed out the Scots allowing on one hit in two innings with one strike out.

Huntingdon lead by four runs after recording three hits in the bottom of the 3rd inning, 4-0. Walding scored the Hawks' first run from third base on senior Drew Harrell's fielder choice. Sophomore Evan Agnew crossed home plate after a Scot fielding error, 2-0, before Odom's single to right center knocked in the final two runs of the inning.

The Hawks extended their lead by eight runs after the bottom of the 4th inning on four hits. Agnew drove in the Hawks' fifth run of the game from a single to right field. Another costly Scots' error allowed Agnew to score followed by Odom's two run homer over the left field wall giving the Hawks an eight run margin, 8-0.

Walding's second hit of the night to left field drove in sophomore Austin White from third base for Huntingdon's ninth run of the game, 9-0.

Huntingdon registered their final run of the game, 10-0, on Maryville's third error in the bottom of the 6th inning for the ten run victory on Saturday evening's elimination contest.

The third-seeded Hawks (23-16) turn their sights on the GSAC championship game on Sunday, May 1, beginning at 1 p.m. Eastern against Piedmont (29-13). Huntingdon will have to defeat the Lions twice on Sunday to claim the GSAC title.
