Smith’s two-run homer lifts Hawks in ninth inning

ATLANTA, Ga. – Outfielder Trey Smith homered in the top of the ninth and the defense held in the bottom of the ninth as the Huntingdon baseball team took a 7-5 win from Oglethorpe on Tuesday.

Oglethorpe tied the game 5-5 in the bottom of the eighth on a Joseph Parillo double. But the Hawks (12-4) answered with two big hits in the ninth. Catcher Joseph Odom led off the inning with a single up the middle and Smith put the Hawks ahead with his second home run of the season.

Smith, a Montgomery native and Montgomery Catholic graduate, finished 3-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs.

In the bottom of the ninth, freshman pitcher Tyler Spivey helped Huntingdon close the door. Spivey, who picked up five saves in his first six collegiate appearances, earned his first win in his seventh appearance. The 6-foot-4 righty struck out the first Oglethorpe batter and forced the second batter to ground out to second base. After a Huntingdon error allowed Oglethorpe (5-7) to reach base, Spivey forced a ground out to third to end the game.

In addition to Smith, Evan Agnew and Grant Brown both had three hits for the Hawks. Agnew was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run. The junior drove in Huntingdon's first two runs with a triple in the second inning. Brown was 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run. Tyler Blackwell also had an RBI and Austin White scored once.

Huntingdon returns to action at Posey Field on Friday, hosting Blackburn.
