Huntingdon baseball comes up short against Emory

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Huntingdon gave up two runs in the top of the ninth and dropped a 5-4 game to Emory on Sunday. The loss was the second to the Eagles in two days.

Huntingdon (17-8) tied the game 3-3 in the eighth inning when Jordan Freeman scored on a Tyler Blackwell single. Trailing 5-3 in the bottom of the ninth, a Freeman sacrifice fly scored Grant Brown to make it a one-run game with runners on second and third and two outs.

But the Hawks' comeback attempt came up short.

Trey Smith drew a walk to load the bases before Blackwell worked Emory pitcher Matt McMahon to a full count. McMahon recorded the strikeout to end the game.

Huntingdon's first two runs came in the fifth inning. Austin White scored on a Brown single and Kevin Plyler scored on a Seth Currie double to give the Hawks a 2-1 lead entering the sixth inning.

Brown finished 3-for-5 and Currie and Joseph Odom each had two hits.

Cory Belyeu (4-2) took the loss, striking out two, walking one, allowing four hits and two runs in 2 1/3 innings of relief. Grant Lowman started the game, struck out four, walked two, gave up four hits and allowed three runs in 6 2/3 innings.

Ben Hinojosa picked up the win for Emory (16-7) in 8 1/3 innings. McMahon got the save.

Huntingdon returns to action on Friday at Berry.
