Huntingdon’s Lowman and Conville earn GSAC baseball honors

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Huntingdon pitcher Grant Lowman and head baseball coach D.J. Conville were both recognized by the Great South Athletic Conference on Thursday. Lowman was named the GSAC Freshman of the Year and Conville was named the GSAC Coach of the Year.

A total of 16 Huntingdon baseball players received recognition from the GSAC, including nine Academic All-Conference players.

"Lowman is very deserving of this recognition," Conville said. "He's been pretty solid for us all year and he's stepped in and been really strong in some important games."

Lowman is 6-1 this season with a 2.25 ERA, 50 strikeouts, 28 walks, 49 hits and 16 earned runs in 64 innings of work. In conference, he is 4-0 with a 1.73 ERA, 20 strikeouts, 12 walks, 23 hits and five earned runs in 26 innings.

"Catching for him this year, he's had a lot of command and has been able to throw strikes," said Huntingdon catcher Joseph Odom, the 2011 GSAC Freshman of the Year. "He's stepped up for us in some big games. It's been good to watch him develop from the start of the season to Freshman of the Year."

Odom joined pitcher John Rice, middle infielder Austin White and designated hitter Grant Brown on the All-Conference team. Jordan Freeman and Tyler Spivey joined Lowman on the All-Freshman team.

Evan Agnew, Cory Belyeu, Will Davis, Tate Fowler, Jordan Green, Grant Hayes, Josh Knuth, Cameron Lewis and Hunter Smith represented the Hawks on the Academic All-Conference team. Smith was also a GSAC Sportsmanship Award winner.

For Conville, this is his second GSAC Coach of the Year award since 2009.

"Coach of the Year is a reflection of the players in your program and the coaches on your staff," Conville said. "The guys have bought into what we are trying to do and I appreciate their hard work. I'm blessed to have two assistants like (Scott) Mularz and (Joey) Holcomb. They do a great job for this program."

Conville won his 200th game earlier this season. In his eighth season as the Hawks' head coach, Conville's record stands at 214-115. The Hawks are 27-11 this season, won the GSAC regular-season title and are the No. 1 seed entering this weekend's conference tournament in LaGrange, Ga.

"Coach does a great job of challenging us and pushing us to be better," Odom said. "We feel like he is deserving of the honor. He does so much for us, when we take the field, we want to win for him."
