Huntingdon baseball team focused entering GSAC tournament

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon baseball team has tried to keep a similar approach to each game this season. Head coach D.J. Conville's philosophy has been simple, each game is important and each game is an opportunity to get better.

The Hawks are taking the same attitude into this weekend's Great South Athletic Conference baseball tournament in LaGrange, Ga.

"We're trying to treat this weekend like any other weekend," said Conville, the GSAC Coach of the Year. "I don't want our guys to change a thing when it comes to how we approach this weekend. We're focused on one game on Friday and after that we'll focus on the next game. If all goes well, we hope to be focusing on one game on Sunday."

Top-seeded Huntingdon (27-11) opens the tournament on Friday against fourth-seeded Maryville (18-18) at 2 p.m. Central. Piedmont and LaGrange will play in the other first-round game at 6 p.m.

"We're playing really well right now," Huntingdon catcher Joseph Odom said. "It feels like we're starting to click at the right time, but we understand that we have to take it one game at a time. We want to try and win the first game. After that, we'll think about the next game."

The Hawks have won eight of their last 10 games and took two games from Maryville last weekend to clinch the regular-season GSAC title. Huntingdon designated hitter Grant Brown said he expects the Hawks to continue to play with confidence.

"We feel pretty good going in and we're trying to keep the same approach," Brown said. "We've been swinging the bats pretty well, our pitching has been solid and our defense has stepped up. We want to try and put all of those together again this weekend."
