Huntingdon baseball completes season sweep of Birmingham-Southern

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Keegan Lambeth and Seth Currie drove in five runs and Huntingdon's pitching and defense took care of the rest as the Hawks beat Birmingham-Southern 5-4 on Tuesday.

The win capped a season-sweep of the Panthers. The Hawks (24-9) beat Birmingham-Southern (25-12) 4-3 and 4-1 earlier this season.

Lambeth smashed a three-run home run in the first inning for a 3-1 lead and Currie hit a two-run single in the sixth for a 5-2 lead. The Panthers rallied with two runs in the seventh inning before closer Neil Lawler took the mound for the final three innings.

Lawler entered the game in the seventh inning with a 5-4 lead, runners on first and second and no outs. The junior worked his way out of the seventh without giving up a run and only allowed one batter to reach base in the eighth.

In the ninth, the Panthers managed a triple with one out. Lawler struck out the next batter and forced the final batter to hit a grounder to shortstop Austin White, who made the play to second baseman Caleb Astin for the final out.

Lawler earned his sixth save of the season with three strikeouts, a walk, a hit batter and two hits in three innings. Joseph Fincher (5-2) picked up the win in relief of starter Grant Lowman. Lowman went 2 1/3 innings before Fincher took the mound for 3 2/3 innings.

Lambeth and Trey Smith each finished with two hits and a run. Grant Brown, Joseph Odom and White each scored once.

Huntingdon returns to action on Friday, hosting Piedmont at 6 p.m.
