Huntingdon baseball takes Game 1 and Game 2 from Piedmont

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon baseball team took the first two games of a three-game series from Piedmont on Saturday.

The Hawks won the first game 5-3 and won the second game 6-2. The two teams will wrap up the series on Sunday at 1 p.m. The game will also be Senior Day for the Hawks (26-9).

Huntingdon's pitchers held Piedmont (19-20) to eight hits in each game and combined for 21 strikeouts in the doubleheader.

Joseph Fincher (6-2) earned the win in Game 1 in relief of starter Cory Belyeu. Belyeu struck out four, walked two, scattered five hits and allowed three runs in 6 2/3 innings. Closer Neil Lawler earned the save, his seventh of the season, facing four batters and striking out three in the ninth inning. Lawler also had three strikeouts in the ninth inning of Game 2.

Gavin Free (5-4) picked up the win in the second game, striking out eight, walking two, allowing five hits and two runs in six innings. Fincher struck out three in two innings of relief before Lawler finished the game.

Huntingdon built a 3-1 lead in Game 1 before Piedmont tied the game 3-3 in the seventh inning. The Hawks answered in the eighth inning as Austin White and Seth Currie each scored on a wild pitch.

White and Curry each scored twice in the first game and Jordan Freeman scored the Hawks' other run. Joseph OdomCaleb Astin and Evan Agnew each finished the game with a RBI.

In Game 2, Huntingdon took a 5-0 lead after four innings and added a final run in the eighth inning. Currie, Astin and Grant Brown combined for seven of Huntingdon's 11 hits in the game.

Currie had three hits and two runs and Astin and Brown each had two hits, a RBI and a run. Freeman had a RBI and a run, Trey Smith, Odom and Keegan Lambeth each had a RBI and Agnew scored once.
