Five Hawks recognized as USA South Athletes of the Week

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Two baseball players, two tennis players and a women's lacrosse player represent Huntingdon this week as USA South Athletes of the Week.

Freshman Will Pharis was named the USA South Baseball Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week and Jackson Cruce was named the conference Pitcher of the Week. Bobby Foroughian was named the USA South Men's Tennis Player of the Week and freshman Justin McQueen earned Rookie of the Week honors. Jen Price was named the conference's Women's Lacrosse Player of the Week.

Pharis was 6-for-12 with five RBIs and five runs in the Hawks' three-game series with Oglethorpe this weekend and Cruce was 1-0 on the mound with a complete-game shutout.

Foroughian opened the season with a 2-0 record at No. 1 singles with straight-set wins over Millsaps and Tougaloo. He teamed with Zac Baldwin for two wins at No. 1 doubles. McQueen earned his first two collegiate wins with straight-set singles victories over Millsaps and Tougaloo.

Price scored five goals in the Lady Hawks' season opener to become the first Huntingdon women's lacrosse player to earn such recognition. This is the first season the second-year program has been affiliated with a conference.

Baseball Player of the Week
Will Pharis, Huntingdon - The freshman infielder from Trussville, Alabama went a combined 6-for-12 (.500) with five runs scored, five RBI, two doubles, one walk and one stolen base last week as the Hawks faced Oglethorpe in a three-game series. Pharis helped Huntingdon win two of the three contests by posting a .538 on-base percentage and a .667 slugging percentage. Also Nominated: Chris Power, Methodist; Evan Gresham, Piedmont.

Baseball Pitcher of the Week
Jackson Cruce, Huntingdon- The McCalla, Alabama sophomore tossed a complete-game, seven-inning, shutout in a 10-0 win over Oglethorpe in his only action on the mound last week. Cruce went the distance and allowed five hits with one walk and three strikeouts. Also Nominated: Chris Goershel, Piedmont.

Men's Tennis Player of the Week
Bobby Foroughian, Huntingdon - The sophomore from Baton Rouge, Louisiana has earned a 2-0 record at both the number-one singles and doubles flights so far this spring. In singles play, Foroughian collected wins over opponents from Millsaps and Tougaloo. In doubles, Foroughian teamed with Zac Baldwin to earn the two victories.

Lacrosse Player of the Week
Jen Price, Huntingdon - The San Ramon, California sophomore midfielder tallied five points on five goals as the Hawks opened the season with a 17-14 win over Millsaps. Price also added three groundballs, two draw controls and one caused turnover. Also Nominated: Mckynsey Douglas, Piedmont.

Softball Player of the Week
Chelsea Brewer, Greensboro - The freshman outfielder from Bennett, North Carolina went a combined 8-for-14 (.571) with four runs scored, two RBI, one double, one triple and one walk as The Pride have begun the season with a 2-2 record. In two losses versus nationally-ranked Emory, Brewer was a combined 3-for-6 with one run scored and one walk. In two wins over Eastern Mennonite, Brewer was a combined 5-for-8 with three runs scored, two RBI, one double and one triple. Also Nominated: Taylor Dix, Averett; Olivia Duncan, Piedmont; Kalyn Jones, Maryville.

Softball Pitcher of the Week
Jordin Ellingson, Piedmont - The Cornelia, Georgia sophomore earned a complete-game win in a 7-3 victory over Birmingham Southern in her only action on the mound last week. Ellingson went the distance and two earned runs on four hits with zero walks and six strikeouts. Also Nominated: Mary Beth Smith, Averett.

 Men's Basketball Player of the Week
Patrick Dugger, LaGrange - The senior center from Fayetteville, Georgia averaged 23.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, 4.0 blocks and 1.0 steals per contest as the Panthers compiled a 2-0 record last week versus Conference competition. In a 96-83 win over Piedmont, Dugger totaled 16 points, six rebounds, two steals, two blocks and one assist. In a 94-88, overtime, victory over Maryville, who was previously unbeaten in League play, notched a double-double of 31 points and 11 rebounds to go along with six blocks. Also Nominated: Jamal Pullen, Ferrum; Josh Morrison, N.C. Wesleyan; Christian Ford, Maryville;Austin Hill, Huntingdon; Bradley Robinson, Averett.

Women's Basketball Player of the Week
Tiffany Bell, N.C. Wesleyan - The senior guard from Waldorf, Maryland averaged 20.5 points, 7.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1.0 steals and 1.0 blocks per contest as the Bishops compiled a 2-0 record last week versus Conference competition. In a 79-56 win over Greensboro, Bell totaled 25 points, nine assists, three assists, two blocks and one steal. In a 69-58 victory over Averett, Bell scored 16 points, grabbed five rebounds, dished out two assists and collected one steal. Also Nominated: Shanita Hampton, Greensboro; Chandler Alverson, Piedmont; Lailah Farmer, Maryville; Pat Pickens, Huntingdon; Kelsey Mitchell, LaGrange; Jessica Myers, Averett.

 

Rookies of the Week

Baseball Rookie of the Week

Men's Tennis Rookie of the Week
Justin McQueen, Huntingdon - The freshman from Fairview, Tennessee has earned a win at both the number four and number six singles positions so far this season for the Hawks. His victory at the number-four position came over an opponent from Tougloo while his win at the number-six spot came over an opponent from Millsaps.

Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week
Devan Gregory, Greensboro - The Greensboro, North Carolina freshman guard scored a team-high 21 points in an 81-66 loss at USA South foe N.C. Wesleyan in the team's lone contest last week. Gregory also added four rebounds, two steals and one assist in the defeat. Also Nominated: Chase England, Piedmont; Jalen Vince, William Peace; Charles Bryant, Averett.

Women's Basketball Rookie of the Week
Kenyata Harris, N.C. Wesleyan The Raleigh, North Carolina freshman guard averaged a double-double of 17.5 points and 10.5 rebounds to go along with 3.0 blocks and 1.5 steals per contest as the Bishops posted a 2-0 record last week versus USA South competition. In a 79-55 win over Greensboro, Harris totaled 18 points, seven rebounds, four blocks and two steals. In a 69-58 victory over Averett, Harris tallied a double-double of 17 points and 14 rebounds to go along with two blocks, one assist and one steal. Also Nominated: Monique Lofton, Methodist; Shea Smith, Ferrum; Mindy Brackins, Maryville; Crystal Alston, William Peace; Brianna Taylor, Averett. 

Softball Rookie of the Week
Jessica Long, Averett - The freshman infielder/outfielder from Prospect Hill, North Carolina went a combined 6-for-11 (.545) with three runs scored, two RBI, two doubles, two walks and two stolen bases as the Cougars have begun the season with a 2-2 record. In two losses versus nationally-ranked Emory, Long was a combined 3-for-6 with one double. In two non-conference wins over Maryville, Long was a combined 3-for-5 with three runs scored, two RBI, one double, two walks and two stolen bases. Also Nominated: Allison Vaughn, Piedmont; Jennibeth Burge, William Peace.

Softball Rookie Pitcher of the Week
Lauren Miller, Greensboro - The Zebulon, North Carolina freshman tossed 5.0 innings and earned one win in two appearances for The Pride last week. In a 6-4 win over Eastern Mennonite, Miller came on in relief to pitch three scoreless innings, allowing two hits with one walk and one strikeout to grab the victory. In a 9-3 loss to nationally-ranked Emory, Miller collected a no-decision by tossing the first two innings, allowing two runs on two hits with one walk.
