Huntingdon baseball edges LaGrange for 7th straight win

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon baseball team used a pair of two-out hits to score four runs in the fourth inning and held on to beat LaGrange 6-4 on Friday night.

The win was the seventh straight for the Hawks and the first game of a three-game USA South Athletic Conference series. Game 2 is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Trailing 4-2 in the fourth inning, Huntingdon (8-3, 4-0 USA South) had the bases loaded with two outs and sophomore Landon Sessions at the plate with a full count. Sessions singled up the middle to score Nathan Edwards and Cheston Wesson and tie the game 4-4.

Sophomore Gunnar Peters followed with a double to right field, scoring Jordan Freeman and Sessions to give the Hawks a 6-4 lead.

Starting pitcher Joseph Fincher held LaGrange (2-6, 0-1 USA South) in check during his final three innings, allowing just two hits and striking out five before Neil Lawler closed out the game in the ninth.

Fincher (3-0) picked up the win in eight innings, striking out six, walking three and allowing six hits and two earned runs. Lawler earned his third save, striking out one, walking one and forcing two ground outs.

Huntingdon's first two runs came in the first inning as Victor Taylor drove in Peters and Trammell DeJarnett stole home for a 2-0 lead. LaGrange scored four runs in the top of the fourth on four hits and two Huntingdon errors.

Peters finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run and Freeman was 2-for-2 with one run.
