Huntingdon baseball earns third conference sweep of the season

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Junior second baseman Jordan Freeman hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning to tie the game and senior Trammell DeJarnett scored on a wild pitch in the 10th inning to lift the Huntingdon baseball team past Greensboro College 7-6 on Saturday.

The win was the second of the day for the Hawks. Huntingdon beat the Pride 5-4 in Game 1.

The two wins gave Huntingdon (15-5, 11-1 USA South) a series sweep over their conference rival. In four USA South series this season, Huntingdon has three sweeps. All three games against Greensboro were decided by one run.

In the final game of the series, Huntingdon fell behind 6-4 in the seventh inning. After DeJarnett led off the bottom of the eighth with a bunt, Freeman stepped to the plate and hit his second home run of the season.

Neither team scored in the ninth before the Hawks retired three straight Greensboro batters in the top of the 10th. In the bottom of the 10th, DeJarnett led off with a walk and advanced to third on a Greensboro error.

With one out and DeJarnett on third, the Pride (2-12, 1-10 USA South) intentionally walked one batter before DeJarnett ended the game on a wild pitch.

The Hawks' center fielder finished the game with three runs and a RBI and finished the day with four runs, a RBI and three stolen bases. Freeman finished with three runs on the day. Junior first baseman Victor Taylor had three RBIs in the doubleheader and sophomore left fielder Patrick Kucera scored three runs and had four stolen bases.

Freshman third baseman Will Pharis hit a solo home run in Game 2. Sophomore short stop Landon Sessions scored the Hawks' remaining run in Game 2 and sophomore designated hitter Cheston Wesson had two hits.

Senior Mitchell Luckie (1-0) picked up the win in 3 1/3 innings of relief. Starter Gavin Free went 6 1/3 innings, striking out five, walking five, scattering five hits and allowing three earned runs.

Sophomore Jackson Cruce (5-0) picked up the win in Game 1, striking out five, walking four and allowing four runs and seven hits in 7 1/3 innings. Reliever Tate Fowler helped the Hawks get through the eighth inning before closer Neil Lawler earned his sixth save in an inning of relief.

Trailing 4-3 in the bottom of the fifth inning, Huntingdon tied the game on a RBI single by Free to score Freeman and took the lead in the sixth inning when Kucera scored on a sacrifice fly by Taylor.

Free was 2-for-4 with two RBIs in Game 1. Taylor also had two RBIs and Pharis had one RBI in the first game.

Huntingdon steps out of conference play on Tuesday for a road game at Millsaps.
