Hawks score three runs in the ninth to get by 21st-ranked Millsaps

JACKSON, Miss. – The Huntingdon baseball team scored three runs with two outs in the top of the ninth and held Millsaps in the bottom of the ninth to pick up a 7-4 win on Tuesday.

The win was the seventh straight for the Hawks (16-5). It was the second win in three games with Millsaps this season. The Majors took the first meeting 5-3 on Feb. 8 and Huntingdon won 4-3 on Feb. 18. Millsaps, ranked 21st by the American Baseball Coaches Association, drops to 12-8 with the loss.

Tied 4-4 with two outs in the top of the ninth, short stop Landon Sessions scored the go-ahead run on a single by center fielder Trammell DeJarnett. Second baseman Jordan Freeman followed with a RBI double to score DeJarnett. Freeman then scored on a single by first baseman Victor Taylor.

In the bottom of the ninth, winning pitcher Tate Fowler (1-1) faced four batters, forcing a ground out, a pop out and a line out and allowing one single. Fowler pitched the final three innings, holding Millsaps to two hits and no runs.

Freeman led Huntingdon at the plate with four RBIs and a run on a 3-for-5 day. DeJarnett drove in two runs and scored twice on a 2-for-5 day. Taylor was 3-for-5 with a RBI and Sessions was 2-for-3 with two runs.

Left fielder Patrick Kucera scored one run and stole two bases and catcher Clark Berry scored once.

Huntingdon took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a RBI double by Freeman and built a 4-2 lead in the fifth with a RBI double by DeJarnett and a two-run single by Freeman. Millsaps tied the game 4-4 in the bottom of the sixth.

Huntingdon travels to Piedmont this weekend for a key USA South Athletic Conference series. The first game of the series is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Friday.
