WILSON, N.C. – The Huntingdon baseball team carried a one-run lead into the eighth inning, but faltered late in a 2-1 loss to Ferrum College on Thursday.
Ferrum scored both runs in the top of the eighth to take Game 1 of the three-game series. Huntingdon (18-13, 15-7 USA South) and Ferrum (19-13, 16-6 USA South) will meet in Game 2 of the series at 10 a.m. on Friday.
Gavin Free (4-4) took the loss for the Hawks, striking out 10, walking one, scattering eight hits and allowing two earned runs in 7 2/3 innings.
Catcher Clark Berry scored on an error in the fifth inning for the Hawks' run. Berry was one of six Hawks to record one hit in the game.
