Sessions’ two-out single lifts Hawks in bottom of the 9th

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Junior short stop Landon Sessions hit a two-out single to drive in Mason Throneberry in the bottom of the ninth inning on Saturday to lift the Huntingdon baseball team over North Carolina Wesleyan 10-9.

Sessions' single ended a back-and-forth game that saw Huntingdon (2-0, 2-0 USA South) take an 8-0 lead early before the Battling Bishops (0-2, 0-2 USA South) rallied in the late innings.

The two teams will wrap up their three-game series on Sunday at noon at Posey Field.

Huntingdon scored four runs in the first inning and four runs in the fourth inning and appeared in control on Saturday. But after giving up two runs in the fifth inning, the Hawks gave up seven runs in the top of the eighth inning on four hits, three walks and two errors.

Trailing 9-8 in the bottom of the eighth, Huntingdon senior Jordan Freeman singled in Patrick Kucera to tie the game. In the bottom of the ninth, Throneberry singled to left field and advanced to second on a Coleson Taylor ground out. Throneberry reached third on a passed ball before Sessions ended the game.

Throneberry finished with two runs and a RBI and picked up the win in one inning of relief.

Kucera had three runs and two RBIs and Sessions (2-for-4 with a run and a RBI), Freeman (3-for-4 with two runs and a RBI) and first baseman Will Pharis (2-for-5 with two RBIs) each had multiple hits for the Hawks.

Anthony Spivey finished with two RBIs and a run, Jordan Criswell drove in one run and Alec Raley scored one run.
