Hawks complete sweep of N.C. Wesleyan on opening weekend

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon baseball team wrapped up its first conference sweep of the season with a 13-5 win over North Carolina Wesleyan on Sunday.

The Hawks (3-0, 3-0 USA South) took the first game of the series 10-7 on Friday and won 10-9 on Saturday.

Much like the first two games, Huntingdon built a solid lead early on Sunday. But unlike the first two games, the Hawks didn't let the Battling Bishops (0-3, 0-3 USA South) back in the game in the later innings on Sunday.

Huntingdon took a 7-1 lead in the third inning and led 11-4 after six innings.

Designated hitter Jordan Criswell led the Hawks with four hits, including a triple, and finished 4-for-4 with five runs scored.

Catcher Coleson Taylor, right fielder Cheston Wesson and short stop Landon Sessions combined for nine RBIs for the Hawks. Taylor was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a run. Sessions drove in the first two runs of the game and finished with three RBIs and a run and Wesson also had three RBIs and a run.

Third baseman Jordan Freeman and left fielder Alec Raley each had two hits, a RBI and a run. Second baseman Mason Throneberry scored twice and drove in one run and center fielder Patrick Kucera drove in one run and scored one run.

Freshman Jared Gonzalez (1-0) picked up the win in relief of starter Scott Robertson. Robertson went 3 2/3 innings, striking out three, walking four, allowing three earned runs and scattering seven hits. Gonzalez struck out two and allowed two earned runs on five hits in 4 1/3 innings of relief. Senior Trey Worthington closed out the game in the ninth inning, striking out two and allowing one hit.

Huntingdon returns to action next weekend against conference rival Maryville. Game 1 of the three-game series is set for 6 p.m. on Friday at Posey Field.
