Huntingdon baseball wins series at LaGrange

LAGRANGE, Ga. – The Huntingdon baseball team bounced back from a tough start at LaGrange on Friday and won two games on Saturday.

The Hawks swept the doubleheader, winning the final two games of the three-game series 10-3 and 11-4. LaGrange won the first game 9-0 on Friday.

Senior third baseman Jordan Freeman and junior center fielder Patrick Kucera combined for 12 hits, five RBIs and five runs in the doubleheader. Freeman was 6-for-10 with four RBIs, three runs and three doubles in the two wins and Kucera was 6-for-11 with a RBI and two runs. Junior left fielder Alec Raley was 5-for-10 with a RBI, two runs and two doubles on Saturday.

In Game 1, Huntingdon (6-3, 6-3 USA South) took control with six runs in the sixth inning. Kucera, Raley and right fielder Anthony Spivey each had three hits in the game and Freeman had two hits and three RBIs.

Shortstop Landon Sessions scored three runs and second baseman Mason Throneberry scored twice. Jordan Criswell and Will Pharis each scored one run in the opener.

Jackson Cruce (3-0) earned the win in 6 2/3 innings. Cruce struck out four, scattered four hits, walked five and allowed two earned runs.

In Game 2, Huntingdon took a 3-0 lead in the first three innings and led 10-1 going into the bottom of the fifth inning.

Jared Gonzalez (2-0) picked up the win in six innings, allowing seven hits and four earned runs, striking out five and walking three.

Freeman was 4-for-6 with three runs in Game 2 and Kucera was 3-for-6 with a RBI. Senior Victor Taylor drove in three runs and Raley and Throneberry each had two hits and two runs. Criswell had two hits and a run, Clark Berry had two hits and a RBI and Spivey and Sessions both had a run and a RBI.

Huntingdon returns to action at home on Tuesday. The Hawks host Birmingham-Southern at 6 p.m.
