Huntingdon scores 12 runs in Game 2 to even series with Piedmont

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon baseball team scored 10 runs in the final two innings and knocked off Piedmont 12-0 on Sunday. The game was shortened to seven innings by the USA South Athletic Conference's 12-run rule.

After Piedmont's 6-3 win on Saturday, Sunday's win evened the series at 1-1. Huntingdon (12-6, 12-5 USA South) and Piedmont (12-5, 12-5 USA South) will wrap up the series on Monday at noon. The two teams are currently tied for first in the conference.

Huntingdon took a 1-0 lead in the first and led 2-0 after five innings before a six-run sixth inning all but put the game away. A single by center fielder Patrick Kucera brought in the first run of the sixth before third baseman Jordan Freeman hit a grand slam to left field. Second baseman Mason Throneberry singled to score the final run of the inning.

The home run was the fourth of the season for Freeman, who leads the conference with 25 RBIs and is tied for first in home runs. The senior finished the day 2-for-4 with four RBIs and three runs.

Kucera was 3-for-4 with a RBI and three runs and Throneberry was 2-for-4 with a RBI and a run. Right fielder Anthony Spivey finished with two RBIs and two runs and left fielder Alec Raley had two runs and a RBI. Designated hitter Gunnar Peters, first baseman Will Pharis and pinch hitter Kevin Johnston each had one RBI and shortstop Landon Sessions scored one run.

Junior Zack Watson (2-2) pitched a complete game to earn the win. Watson struck out two, walked four and scattered four hits in the seven-inning shutout.
