Huntingdon takes series from Piedmont, moves into 1st in USA South

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon baseball team closed out its series with Piedmont with a 10-6 win on Monday.

It was the fifth conference series win for Huntingdon this season. Piedmont took the first game of the series 6-3 on Saturday before Huntingdon won 12-0 on Sunday. With Monday's win, Huntingdon (13-6, 13-5 USA South) moves into first place in the conference and Piedmont (12-6, 12-6 USA South) is second.

Huntingdon jumped out to a 6-0 lead in Game 3 and led 8-3 after three innings. Junior right fielder Anthony Spivey drove in four of the Hawks' first eight runs. Spivey finished 4-for-4 with four RBIs and a run.

Left fielder Alec Raley was the only other Hawks with multiple hits. Raley finished with two hits and two runs.

First baseman Will Pharis drove in two runs and center fielder Patrick Kucera and second baseman Mason Throneberry each had a RBI and two runs. Shortstop Landon Sessions had a RBI and a run, designated hitter Gunnar Peters drove in one run and third baseman Jordan Freeman and catcher Clark Berry each scored once.

Freshman Jared Gonzalez (4-0) picked up the win, striking out three, scattering 11 hits and allowing three earned runs in six innings. Throneberry earned the save, his fifth of the season, in three innings of relief.

Huntingdon plays at Rhodes on Tuesday at 2 p.m.
