Huntingdon drops two games to Averett

DANVILLE, Va. – The Huntingdon baseball team dropped both games of a conference doubleheader to Averett on Saturday. The Hawks fell 13-7 in Game 1 and 6-5 in Game 2.

Huntingdon (14-8, 13-7 USA South), which entered the series at the top of the USA South standings, is tied for third in the conference. Averett (14-6, 10-4 USA South) jumped from third to first in the standings.

The two teams will play Game 3 of the series on Sunday at noon.

Huntingdon led in both games on Saturday. In Game 1, the Hawks led 5-0 in the fifth inning before Averett scored 11 runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Five Hawks had multiple hits in the game as Huntingdon finished with 14 hits. Designated hitter Gunnar Peters was 3-for-4 with a RBI and a run and Will Pharis had two hits and scored two runs. Anthony Spivey had two hits and a RBI, Patrick Kucera had two hits and a run and Josh Childers had two hits.

Alec Raley had a RBI and a run, Victor Taylor had one RBI and Jordan Freeman and Josh Hines each scored one run.

Jackson Cruce (4-1) took the loss.

In Game 2, Huntingdon rallied from a 4-1 deficit and took a 5-4 lead in the seventh inning. But the Cougars scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to end the game.

Pharis had two hits, a RBI and a run and Dakota Beane and Coleson Taylor each had two hits and a run in Game 2. Raley had a RBI and a run and Kucera scored one run.

Kucera (1-1) took the loss in relief.
