DANVILLE, Va. – The Huntingdon baseball team fell behind early and lost to Averett 10-6 on Sunday.
Trailing 8-1, Huntingdon scored five runs in the seventh and eighth innings but could not catch the Cougars.
The loss was the third straight for the Hawks (14-9, 13-8 USA South). Conference leader Averett (15-6, 11-4 USA South) took the first two games of the series 13-7 and 6-5 on Saturday.
Center fielder Patrick Kucera had two hits and two RBIs, first baseman Will Pharis had two hits and three runs and shortstop Dakota Beane had two hits and a RBI. Pinch hitter J. Gardiner had a RBI and a run and catcher Coleson Taylor and designated hitter Kevin Johnston each scored one run.
Starter Jared Gonzalez (4-1) took the loss.
Huntingdon returns to action at 6 p.m. on Tuesday at fourth-ranked Birmingham-Southern (17-3).
