Huntingdon comes up short against No. 5 Birmingham-Southern

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Huntingdon baseball team held fifth-ranked Birmingham-Southern to six hits, but came up short 5-1 on Tuesday night.

Birmingham-Southern (18-3-1) scored three runs on three hits in the first inning and closed the game with one run in the seventh inning and one run in the eighth.

The Hawks (14-10) finished with eight hits, but left 15 runners on base. Huntingdon left the bases loaded in the fourth inning and left two runners on in the third, fifth, seventh and eighth innings.

Huntingdon scored in the eighth inning when second baseman Dakota Beane scored on a fielder's choice by left fielder Alec Raley.

First baseman Will Pharis was the only Huntingdon player with multiple hits and finished 3-for-4 with three doubles.

Starter Matt Gatewood (0-2) took the loss in one inning. Relievers Zach McGrady, Scott Robertson, Trey Worthington and Wes Nail combined to allow three hits and two runs in the final seven innings.

The two teams will play again on Wednesday in Montgomery. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at Posey Field.
