Huntingdon completes sweep of William Peace

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon baseball team used an eight-run second inning to set the tone in an 18-3 win over William Peace on Sunday. The game was shortened to seven innings by the USA South Athletic Conference's 12-run rule.

This was the third conference sweep and the sixth conference series win of the season for the Hawks (17-11, 16-8 USA South). Huntingdon won the first two games of the series 3-1 and 4-2 on Saturday.

Leading 2-0 in the second inning on Sunday, Huntingdon sent 13 batters to the plate and scored eight runs to take a 10-0 lead. Designated hitter Anthony Spivey's grand slam highlighted the inning. The Hawks added four runs in the fourth inning and four runs in the fifth inning to take an 18-3 lead.

Spivey finished 4-for-4 with five RBIs and three runs. Center fielder Patrick Kucera drove in three runs, scored twice and had two stolen bases and left fielder Alec Raley was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs.

Second baseman Mason Throneberry was 2-for-4 with two runs and a RBI and right fielder Gunnar Peters had two hits, a RBI and a run. First baseman Will Pharis scored three runs and drove in one run, catcher Clark Berry and shortstop Landon Sessions each scored twice and had one RBI and third baseman Jordan Freeman had a RBI and a run.

Freshman Jared Gonzalez (5-1) earned the win in six innings. Gonzalez struck out seven, didn't give up a walk, scattered eight hits and allowed one earned run. Junior Heith Brown struck out one and walked one in one inning of relief.

Huntingdon returns to action on Tuesday at 4 p.m. at 23rd-ranked Millsaps.
