Hawks rally past No. 11 Rhodes in eighth inning

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon baseball team scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to get by 11th-ranked Rhodes College 5-3 on Tuesday.

Tied 3-3 in the eighth, second baseman Mason Throneberry singled to score Jordan Freeman and freshman shortstop Dakota Beane doubled to score Patrick Kucera. In the top of the ninth, Huntingdon turned a double play and forced a ground out to end the game.

Kucera (2-1) picked up the win in 4 2/3 innings of relief and Trey Worthington earned the save. Kucera, Worthington, starter Blake Bailey and reliever Zach McGrady combined for six strikeouts, four walks and six hits allowed.

Throneberry finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs and Freeman was 2-for-4 with a RBI and a run. Designated hitter Jordan Criswell, left fielder Alec Raley and first baseman Will Pharis each scored a run.

Rhodes (23-9) took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning and Huntingdon (18-15) answered with three runs in the bottom of the first. Six innings of scoreless ball followed to set up the eighth inning.

The Hawks return to action on Friday at 5 p.m. at Ferrum in Game 1 of a three-game conference series.
