FERRUM, Va. – The Huntingdon baseball team picked up two key conference victories in a doubleheader at Ferrum College on Saturday.
The Hawks (20-15, 18-8 USA South) held Ferrum (20-14, 14-12 USA South) to six hits in a 1-0 win in Game 1 and scored six runs in the top of the ninth to win the second game 16-12.
The two teams will wrap up their three-game series on Sunday at 11 a.m.
With the two wins, Huntingdon remains in third place in the USA South Athletic Conference standings. Methodist (17-6 USA South) leads the conference standings and Averett (16-7 USA South) is second.
In Game 1, Huntingdon and Ferrum played seven innings of scoreless ball before center fielder Patrick Kucera scored on a sacrifice fly by first baseman Will Pharis in the eighth inning.
Pitchers Jackson Cruce and Trey Worthington combined on the shutout for Huntingdon. Cruce started the game and allowed four hits in five innings before Worthington (2-1) picked up the win with two strikeouts and two hits allowed in the final four innings.
Left fielder Alec Raley had two of the Hawks' three hits in the game.
In Game 2, Huntingdon scored seven runs in the second inning but only led 8-7 after four innings. Ferrum led 12-10 after eight innings.
In the top of the ninth, J. Gardiner scored on a sacrifice fly by Raley and Pharis hit a three-run double to give Huntingdon the lead. Right fielder Gunnar Peters hit a two-run double to give Huntingdon a four-run lead.
Third baseman Jordan Freeman finished the game 2-for-4 with two home runs, four RBIs and three runs. Freeman hit a three-run homer in the second inning and a solo homer in the sixth inning. Freeman leads the USA South with seven home runs this season.
Pharis added three RBIs and two runs and Peters finished with two hits, two RBIs and a run. Kucera was 2-for-5 with three runs and a RBI, Dakota Beane had two hits, a RBI and a run and Anthony Spivey had two hits and a RBI.
Raley had a RBI and a run and Mason Throneberry, Gardiner, Coleson Taylor, Payne Adams and Landon Sessions each scored one run.
Brad Eckmyre (1-0) earned the win in relief.
