Hawks close out Millsaps Tournament with win over Ozarks

JACKSON, Miss. – The Huntingdon baseball team wrapped up the Millsaps College Tournament with a 5-1 win over the University of Ozarks on Sunday.

It was the second game between the two teams in the tournament. Huntingdon won the first game 9-6 on Friday.

Unlike Friday's game, the Hawks (5-1) led from the start and were solid on defense. Huntingdon, which committed six errors in Friday's game, was credited with zero errors on Sunday.

Huntingdon sophomore Jared Gonzalez (2-0) picked up the win in seven innings, striking out five, walking one and allowing one run on five hits. Senior Mason Throneberry pitched the final two innings, striking out one and allowing one hit.

Throneberry also came through at the plate, driving in two runs. A Throneberry single in the first inning scored Alec Raley to give the Hawks a 2-0 lead and a Throneberry sacrifice fly scored Anthony Spivey to make it 4-0 in the fifth inning.

Center fielder Patrick Kucera scored two runs in the game. Kucera scored the first run of the game on a ground out by Cody Shoemaker and the third run of the game on a RBI double by Spivey. Shoemaker scored the final run of the game on an error in the seventh inning.

Spivey was the only Hawk with multiple hits, finishing 2-for-4

Huntingdon returns to action at Posey Field on Tuesday, hosting Belhaven at 3 p.m.
