Conville wins 300th game with Hawks

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon baseball team put Belhaven University away in the first inning on Tuesday to help head coach D.J. Conville reach a milestone win.

The Hawks (6-1) downed the Blazers 25-0 in seven innings for Conville's 300th win.

"It's awesome to be part of No. 300," senior center fielder Patrick Kucera said. "Coach Conville has been a big influence in our lives. To see him reach this milestone feels good and we're happy to have been a part of it."

In his 12th season as head coach, Conville has a record of 300-160 at Huntingdon.

"It's humbling and it's an honor to get to 300 wins in a Huntingdon uniform," Conville said. "You can't do something like this without good players and good assistants. This is a tribute to all of the hard-working players and coaches who have come through and been a part of this program."

There was little suspense in win No. 300 as the Hawks sent 22 batters to the plate and scored 19 runs in the first inning.

Kucera and Anthony Spivey each had three RBIs and three runs in the first inning and Alec Raley had a RBI and three runs in the inning. Spivey ended the inning's scoring with a three-run home run to right field.

Spivey finished the game 1-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs. Raley and Landon Sessions were the only Hawks with multiple hits in the game. Raley was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and three runs and Sessions was 2-for-2 with four RBIs and four runs.

Kucera finished with four RBIs and three runs and Cody Shoemaker had three RBIs and two runs. Mason Throneberry and Jay Jordan each had two RBIs and three runs, Cheston Wesson had a RBI and a run, Coleson Taylor scored two runs and Jordan Criswell scored one run.

Matt Gatewood (1-0) got the win for Huntingdon, striking out one, walking two and allowing two hits in four innings. Gatewood, Wes Nail and Jordan combined for a three-hit shutout. Nail struck out two and allowed a hit in two innings and Jordan struck out three in the seventh inning.

Huntingdon returns to action in the Rhodes Tournament this weekend. Huntingdon will play Covenant on Friday at 11 a.m. before taking on seventh-ranked Rhodes on Saturday at 2 p.m. and fifth-ranked Webster on Sunday at 11 a.m.
