Huntingdon rallies late to beat No. 5 Webster

MILLINGTON, Tenn. – The Huntingdon baseball team scored six runs in the top of the ninth inning to get by fifth-ranked Webster University 9-6 on Saturday night.
It was the Hawks' second game of the day against a top-10 team. Huntingdon (8-2) opened the day with a 4-3 loss to seventh-ranked Rhodes College.
Against Webster (1-1), Huntingdon trailed 6-3 after eight innings before taking control in the ninth. Patrick Kucera led off the inning with a walk, Alec Raley was hit by a pitch and Anthony Spivey singled to load the bases.
Kucera scored on a Luke Ates fielder's choice to make it a two-run game and Cheston Wesson singled to score Raley and make it a 6-5 game. An RBI single by Hunter Bower scored Gunnar Peters to tie the game before Coleson Taylor's two-run double scored Mason Throneberry and Bower to give the Hawks an 8-6 lead. Taylor scored the final run on an RBI single by Kucera.
In the bottom of the ninth, Throneberry took the mound and earned the save. Throneberry forced a ground out to third and gave up a single before getting a strikeout and a pop out to end the game.
Brad Eckmyre (1-0) earned the win in one inning of relief. Starter Jared Gonzalez went five innings, striking out nine, walking three and allowing six hits and three runs.
Taylor was one of four Hawks with multiple hits, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs. Kucera was 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI, Wesson was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run and Spivey was 2-for-6 with an RBI.
Raley and Bower each had an RBI and a run, Ates had one RBI and Throneberry and Peters each had one run.
Against Rhodes, the Hawks built a 3-0 lead in the first three inning before the Lynx (5-4) rallied with two runs in the fifth inning and two runs in the seventh. The loss snapped a six-game winning streak for the Hawks.
Raley was 3-for-3 with a run in the loss and Kucera scored two runs. Cody Shoemaker and Jordan Criswell each had an RBI.
Zach McGrady (2-1) took the loss in 6 2/3 innings, striking out five, walking four and allowing four hits and three earned runs.
Huntingdon returns to action at home on Tuesday at 5 p.m. against Oglethorpe.
