Huntingdon’s Jordan and Paul named USA Athletes of the Week

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  – Freshmen Jay Jordan and Jade Paul were recognized with USA South Athletes of the Week honors on Monday.

Jordan was named Baseball Rookie of the Week while Paul was named Lacrosse Rookie of the Week.

Jordan, a native of Dothan, Ala., finished the weekend 6-for-10 with two runs scored, two RBIs and was walked twice in a three-game series against USA South opponent Greensboro College.

In Friday's 12-0 victory over the Pride, Jordan went 2-for-2 with two RBIs and was walked twice. On Saturday, the third-baseman had one hit and scored one run while recording three hits with one run scored in Sunday's loss.

Paul finished the week with five points while the Lady Hawks went 2-1. She scored four goals and had one assist while picking up six ground balls, taking four draw controls and causing three turnovers.

In Monday's win against Alma, Paul registered one goal, four ground balls and two caused turnovers. Against Ferrum, Paul netted two goals and had two draw controls to help lead Huntingdon to its first win over the Panthers. Paul finished the weekend with one goal and one assist in a loss to Greensboro.

Baseball Player of the Week
Chris Ervin, Maryville - The senior designated hitter from Leroy, Alabama went a combined 8-for-16 (.500) with a slugging percentage of 1.188, eight RBI, six runs scored, two doubles, three home runs and one walk as the Scots posted a 4-0 record last week. In a 10-6 win over Emory & Henry, Ervin was 1-for-4 with a run scored and one run batted in on a home run. In a three-game sweep of USA South foe Covenant, Ervin was a combined 7-for-12 with seven RBI, five runs scored, two doubles, two home runs and one walk. Baseball Pitcher of the Week

Kyle Walsh, Averett - The senior from Fairfax, Virginia tossed a complete-game, one-hit, shutout in an 8-0 victory over Washington & Lee in his only appearance on the mound last week for the Cougars. Walsh struck out eight batters while allowing three walks. Additionally, Walsh batted .333 with five RBI and four runs scored in a 3-1 week for the Cougars. Baseball Rookie of the Week

Jay Jordan, Huntingdon - The freshman infielder from Dothan, Alabama went a combined 6-for-10 (.600) with two runs scored, two RBI and two walks as the Hawks took two games out of three versus USA South foe Greensboro last week. In game one, a 12-0 victory, Jordan was a perfect 2-for-2 with two walks and two RBI. Also Nominated: Brendan Lawler, Maryville; Trey Croom, N.C. Baseball Rookie Pitcher of the Week

Brandon Turner, Ferrum - The Stuart, Virginia freshman started and tossed six shutout innings earning the victory in an 8-1 win over Lynchburg in his only appearance on the mound last week for the Panthers. Reitz allowed four hits and one walk while striking out four batters. Also Nominated: Max Bening, Piedmont.

WOMEN'S LACROSSE

Lacrosse Player of the Week
Kirstin Norris, Greensboro - The Bushwood, Maryland senior midfielder totaled 30 points on 16 goals and 14 assists with 13 ground balls, ten draw controls and five caused turnovers in a 3-0 week for the Pride. In a 21-0 victory over Hollins, Norris scored four goals with four assists, five ground balls, four draw controls and one caused turnover. In a 25-1 win over USA South foe LaGrange, Norris totaled six goals, seven assists, four draw controls, three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Finally, in a 16-7 victory over USA South rival Huntingdon, Norris notched six goals, three assists, five ground balls, two draw controls and two caused turnovers. Also Nominated: Katie Burnet, Meredith; Julianne Bove, Ferrum; Mckynsey Douglas, Piedmont.

Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week

Cahner Manns, Piedmont - The Matthews, North Carolina senior midfielder totaled 14 draw controls, seven ground balls and five caused turnovers, as well as, eight points on two goals and six assists as the Lions posted a 2-1 record last week. In a 13-6 win over Puget Sound, Manns tallied a game-high six draw controls, three ground balls, two caused turnovers, one goal and two assists. In a 14-10 victory over George Fox, Manns totaled a game-high seven draw controls, one ground ball, one caused turnover and two assists. Finally, in an 11-9 loss to Pacific (Ore.), Manns contributed three ground balls, two caused turnovers, one draw control, one goal and two assists. Also Nominated: Victoria Doyle, Meredith; Jen Price, Huntingdon; Graceanne Gershner, Ferrum; Ashlynn Parks, Greensboro.

 Lacrosse Rookie of the Week

Jade Paul, Huntingdon - The Woodstock, Georgia freshman midfielder tallied five points on four goals and one assist with six ground balls, four draw controls and three caused turnovers in a 2-1 week for the Hawks. In a 15-11 victory over Alma, Paul scored once with four ground balls, two caused turnovers and one draw control. In the program's first-ever victory over USA South foe Ferrum, 9-5, Paul totaled two goals, two draw controls and one ground ball. Finally, in a 16-7 loss to USA South rival Greensboro, Paul tallied one goal, one assist, one ground ball, one draw control and one caused turnover. Also Nominated: Holly Hite, Meredith; Mattie Keaton, Piedmont. 

SOFTBALL

Softball Player of the Week
Jessica Long, Averett - The junior shortstop from Prospect Hill, North Carolina, hitting leadoff, went a combined 16-for-23 (.697) with a .957 slugging percentage, ten runs scored, one run batted in, four doubles, one triple, two walks and seven stolen bases as the Cougars posted a 4-2 record last week. In a doubleheader split with Lynchburg, Long was a combined 5-for-8 with three runs scored, three doubles and one stolen base. In a doubleheader split with Guilford, Long was a combined 5-for-9 with two runs scored and one stolen base. Finally, in a doubleheader sweep of USA South foe Methodist, Long was perfect at the plate, going a combined 6-for-6 with five runs scored, one run batted in, one double two walks and five stolen bases. Softball Pitcher of the Week

Mary Beth Smith, Averett - The Elon, North Carolina senior earned a 3-0 record last week with a 0.50 ERA for the Cougars in six appearances, four starts, in the circle. In 28 innings pitched, Smith allowed six runs, only two of which were earned, on 17 hits with seven walks and 32 strikeouts. In a 3-1, complete-game win over Lynchburg, Smith allowed one run on seven hits with zero walks and eight strikeouts. In a 3-2, eight-inning, victory over Guilford, Smith went the distance, allowing two unearned runs on four hits with one walk and seven strikeouts. Finally, in a 5-3 win over USA South foe Methodist, Smith tossed 6.1 innings and allowed three runs, only one of which was earned, on five hits with three walks and eight strikeouts. Softball Rookie of the Week

Hannah Hoban, Piedmont - The freshman first baseman from Phoenix, Arizona went a combined 6-for-13 (.462) with a .923 slugging percentage, six RBI, four runs scored, one home run and two walks Lions posted a 3-1 record last week versus USA South competition. In a doubleheader sweep of Covenant, Hoban was a combined 4-for-6 with three RBI, three runs scored, one double, a game-winning home run and two walks. In a doubleheader split with Maryville, Hoban was a combined 2-for-7 with three RBI, one run scored and two doubles. Also Nominated: Kaitlyn Sawyer, Meredith; Elizabeth Wheeler, Maryville; Logan Barbour, Ferrum; Shelby Godwin, N.C. Softball Rookie Pitcher of the Week

Morgan Corland, Maryville - The freshman from Clarksville, Tennessee earned a 2-0 record and a 3.00 ERA in three appearances, two starts, for the Scots last week versus USA South competition. In 14 innings pitched, Corland allowed seven runs on 14 hits with two walks and six strikeouts. In a 7-4 win over LaGrange, Corland went the distance and allowed four runs on five hits with zero walks and five strikeouts. In a 5-0 victory over Piedmont, Corland tossed four shutout innings, allowing four hits with one strikeout. Also Nominated: Melissa Eckman, Piedmont; Kristyn Owen, Averett.

MEN'S TENNIS

Men's Tennis Player of the Week
R.J. Clement, Methodist - The sophomore from Sugar Hill, Georgia earned a 3-0 record at both the number-one singles and number-two doubles positions last week for the Monarchs. Clement earned singles victories over opponents from Guilford, USA South foe Averett and Monmouth. In doubles action, Clement teamed with Teal Howard to gain the three wins. Also Nominated: Daniel Silva, Maryville; James Wright, Averett; John Jones, Huntingdon.

Men's Tennis Rookie of the Week

Kyle Zumstein, LaGrange - The freshman from Smiths Station, Alabama earned a 2-0 record at the number-six singles spot and a 1-1 mark at the number-two doubles position last week for the Panthers. Zumstein earned singles victories over opponents from USA South foes Huntingdon and Maryville. In doubles action, Zumstein teamed with John Mitchell Benton to gain a victory over opponents from Maryville. Also Nominated: Oliver Lindqvist, Averett.

WOMEN'S TENNIS

Women's Tennis Player of the Week
Valeria Berber, N.C. Wesleyan - The senior from La Piedad, Mexico earned a 3-0 singles record at number-one singles and a 2-1 mark at number-one doubles last week for the Bishops. In singles, Berber's three victories came versus USA South foes Meredith, Mary Baldwin and Ferrum. In doubles, she teamed with Stephany Barbera to collect the wins over opponents from Mary Baldwin and Ferrum. Also Nominated: Morgan McDonald, LaGrange; Ran Zhang, Meredith; Caitlin Jennings, Maryville; Sandy Mayson, Huntingdon; Hannah Mattson, Averett; Sam Munze, Methodist.

Women's Tennis Rookie of the Week

 Heidi Sarkkinen, Averett - The freshman from Oulu, Finland earned a 2-0 singles record at both number-one singles and doubles last week for the Cougars. In singles, Sarkkinen earned victories over opponents from Sweet Briar and USA South foe Maryville. In doubles, Sarkkinen teamed with Hannah Mattson to collect the two wins. Also Nominated: Kate DeSilva, Meredith; Josie Waddell, Huntingdon; Stephany Barbera, N.C. Wesleyan.
