Hawks come up short against No. 5 Birmingham-Southern

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Huntingdon baseball team rallied from an early deficit but fell to fifth-ranked Birmingham-Southern 6-5 on Tuesday night.

Trailing 5-2 in the top of the sixth inning, the Hawks (10-7) scored three runs to tie the game. But Birmingham-Southern (12-2) answered with a run in the bottom of the sixth and held off the Hawks.

Down by three runs in the sixth inning, Jordan Criswell scored on a fielder's choice by Cody Shoemaker and Cheston Wesson scored on a ground out by Coleson Taylor. An RBI single by Josh Hines scored Cade Conville to tie the game.

Criswell and Wesson drove in the Hawks' first two runs of the game in the first inning. A triple by Criswell scored Anthony Spivey and a single by Wesson scored Criswell.

Criswell finished 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI. Five Hawks combined for 11 of Huntingdon's 13 hits. Along with Criswell's three hits, Spivey had two hits and a run, Hines had two hits and an RBI and Alec Raley and Jay Jordan each had two hits.

Jordan (0-1) took the loss in relief. Jordan, starter Matt Gatewood and relief pitchers C.J. Sauce and Zack Watson combined for nine strikeouts and eight hits in eight innings.

Huntingdon returns to action at home on Friday against LaGrange. Game 1 of the series is set for 6 p.m.
