Hawks take Game 1 of doubleheader with Millsaps

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon baseball team bounced back from a season-opening loss to Millsaps and split with the Majors on Saturday.

The Hawks won the first game of Saturday's doubleheader 6-4 before falling 12-3 in seven innings in Game 2.

Juniors Joseph Calvert and Corey Lowe and senior Josh Hines combined for eight of the Hawks' 11 hits and seven of Huntingdon's eight RBIs in the doubleheader.

Calvert and Hines led the Hawks (1-2) in the first game. Calvert was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and three runs, including a two-run home run and also recorded a save on the mound. Hines was 2-for-3 with three RBIs, including a three-run triple that gave the Hawks the lead for good in the fifth inning.

Hunter Bower finished with one RBI, Lowe scored twice and Chris Fisher scored once.

Matt Gatewood (1-0) picked up the win, striking out seven, walking four and allowing one earned run and three hits in five innings. Reliever C.J. Sauce struck out three and allowed one earned run and two hits in three innings before Calvert pitched the final inning.

In Game 2, Huntingdon led 3-1 before the Majors (2-1) scored four runs in the sixth inning and seven runs in the seventh inning.

Lowe was 2-for-2 with an RBI and was the only Hawk with multiple hits in the game. Calvert also had an RBI and Wes Powell, Hunter Long and Will Cosby each scored one run.

Freshman Carden Mellown took the loss in five innings.

Huntingdon returns to action on Feb. 11 at home in the Firehouse Classic against Oglethorpe. First pitch is set for 1:30 p.m.
