Hawks split in doubleheader with Southwestern

GEORGETOWN, Texas – The Huntingdon baseball team won the second game of a doubleheader to earn a split with Southwestern University on Saturday.

The Hawks fell 12-4 in the first game before winning the second game 7-5.

Taylor Fought led the Hawks (2-6) with three hits, a solo home run, two RBIs and four runs in the doubleheader.

In the Game 2 victory, Huntingdon scored four runs in the first two innings and carried a 5-5 tie into the seventh inning. The Hawks took the lead on a sacrifice fly by Hunter Bower that scored Will Cosby and added the final run when Fought scored on an error.

Pitcher C.J. Sauce struck out six in the final three innings and allowed just two hits. Sauce (1-0) earned the win in relief of starter Carden Mellown. Sauce finished with seven strikeouts, a walk and two hits in 3 1/3 innings. Mellown struck out six, walked five, hit three batters, allowed four hits and gave up four earned runs in 5 2/3 innings.

Bower finished with two RBIs in the game and Coleson Taylor had one RBI. Cosby was 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs and Fought scored twice. Joseph Calvert, Garrett Breland and Wes Powell each scored one run.

In Game 1, the Hawks led 3-2 before Southwestern (4-2) scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take the lead for good. The Pirates put the game away with seven runs in the seventh inning.

Jeremy Peterson (0-1) took the loss in Game 1 in 1 2/3 innings of relief.

Fought was 2-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs in Game 1. Hunter Long had two RBIs and Garrett Headley and Cade Conville each scored one run in the first game.

Huntingdon returns to action at home on Tuesday against Washington and Lee at 6 p.m.
