Huntingdon improves to 2-0 in USA South

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Huntingdon baseball team picked up its second straight win with a 17-3 victory over Greensboro College on Saturday.

The game was shortened to seven innings by the USA South Athletic Conference's 12-run rule.

Huntingdon (4-10, 2-0 USA South) won the first game of the series 5-2 on Friday night. The Hawks and the Pride (8-6, 0-2 USA South) will close out the three-game series on Sunday at 11 a.m. Central.

In Saturday's win, Huntingdon recorded season-highs in hits (14), RBIs (14) and runs (17). The Hawks fell behind 1-0 in the first inning but answered with one run in the second, five runs in the third, four runs in the fifth and seven runs in the seventh.

Nine different Hawks recorded at least one hit in the game. Sophomores Hunter Long and Will Cosby and junior Garrett Headley combined for eight of Huntingdon's 14 hits. Long was 3-for-5 with two RBIs and four runs, Cosby was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs, including an RBI double and Headley was 2-for-5 with an RBI triple and two runs.

Long had a hand in the Hawks' first four runs of the game. Long scored Huntingdon's first run on a RBI single by Cosby in the second inning. In the third inning, Long hit a two-run single to score Joseph Calvert and Headley. Long then scored on a single by Cosby to make it 4-1.

A two-run double by Wes Powell scored Cosby and Taylor Fought to make it 6-1 after three innings. In the fifth inning, Huntingdon used RBIs from Josh Hines, Powell, Michael Rodda and Headley to take a 10-1 lead.

In the seventh inning, RBIs by Cosby and Rodda made it 12-1 before Headley and Rodda scored on a Greensboro error and Calvert scored on a wild pitch. Kevin Barnett ended the scoring with a two-run, bases-loaded single.

Powell finished with three RBIs and a run and Fought scored three runs. Rodda had two RBIs and a run and Barnett had two RBIs. Hines scored twice and had one RBI and Calvert scored twice.

Matt Gatewood (2-2) earned the win in four innings, striking out four, walking five and allowing five hits and one run. C.J. Sauce pitched the final three innings to pick up a save. Sauce struck out three and gave up three hits and two runs.
