Huntingdon downs Maryville in Game 3 to take conference series

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon baseball team put together a season-high 18 hits in a 15-9 win over Maryville College on Sunday in the final game of a conference series.

The Hawks took the USA South Athletic Conference series 2-1. Huntingdon won 10-5 on Friday before falling 11-7 on Saturday. Huntingdon (9-17, 6-6 USA South) has won three of its four conference series this season.

Juniors Taylor Fought and Corey Lowe powered the Hawks at the plate with a combined eight RBIs and were two of six Hawks to finish with multiple hits.

Fought was 4-for-6 with a three-run home run, five RBIs and two runs. He finished the series 9-for-14 with two home runs, 10 RBIs and four runs. Lowe was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a run on Sunday.

Junior Garrett Headley tripled in hit first at-bat and finished with two hits and three runs. Sophomore Will Cosby had two hits, two runs and an RBI, sophomore Hunter Long had two hits and two runs and senior Josh Hines had two hits, an RBI and a run.

Junior Josh Jackson had an RBI and a run and seniors Cade Conville and Robert Walker and freshman Garrett Breland each scored one run.

Junior Joseph Calvert (1-0) earned the win. Calvert scattered six hits, struck out five, walked three and allowed four earned runs in seven innings.

Huntingdon all but put the game away in the first four innings, scoring three runs in the first inning, three in the second inning and four runs in the fourth inning. RBIs by Cosby, Lowe and Hines brought in the Hawks' first three runs. Fought's three-run homer in the second inning made it a 6-0 game.

In the fourth inning, Cosby scored on a Maryville error before a two-run single by Lowe made it 9-1. Lowe later scored on a wild pitch to make it a nine-run game.

Maryville (15-14, 8-7 USA South) answered with three runs in the fifth inning and two runs in the eighth inning to pull within four runs before Huntingdon extended its lead with five runs in the eighth inning.

Leading 10-6 in the bottom of the eighth, Walker and Conville each scored on separate Maryville errors before an RBI single by Jackson made it a 13-6 game. Fought ended the Hawks' scoring with a two-run single.

Huntingdon returns to action on Tuesday at Oglethorpe for a 5 p.m. (Central) game.
