Hawks stumble against Maryville in Rd. 1 of USA South Tournament
LAGRANGE, Ga. – The Huntingdon baseball team rallied late but lost to Maryville College 5-3 in the opening round of the USA South Athletic Conference Tournament on Wednesday.
The Hawks (12-23) fell behind 4-0 in the first four innings but cut Maryville's lead to two runs late in the game. In the bottom of the ninth inning, Maryville (20-18) forced two quick outs before the Hawks put two runners on with a walk and a single. A ground out to second base ended the game.
Huntingdon will play Piedmont (17-18) in an elimination game on Thursday at 10 a.m. (Eastern) at LaGrange College's Cleveland Field. Piedmont opened the tournament with a 5-2 loss to third-ranked and top-seeded LaGrange (32-4).
Trailing 4-1 in the seventh inning on Wednesday, the Hawks made it a two-run game when Josh Hines scored on an error. Maryville answered in the top of the eighth to take a 5-2 lead before Taylor Fought ended the scoring with a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth.
Fought finished with an RBI and two runs on a 2-for-4 day. Cody Shoemaker was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Corey Lowe was 2-for-3.
Zach McGrady (4-7) took the loss in eight innings.
