Hawks improve to 2-0 on opening weekend

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon baseball team picked up its second straight win over Millsaps with a 6-2 victory on Saturday. 

The Hawks knocked off the Majors 3-2 on Friday in the season opener for both teams.

In Saturday's win, the Hawks scored one run in the third inning to take the lead and added three runs in the sixth and two runs in the seventh to finish off the Majors.

On the mound, junior Blake Mayes (1-0) picked up his first win in his first appearance as a Hawk. Mayes struck out four, walked three and allowed four hits in five scoreless innings.

Relievers Jeremy Peterson, Brooks Freeman and John Crawford held the Majors to two runs in the final four innings. Freeman struck out two, walked one and did not allow a hit in two innings.

Left fielder Garrett Headley scored the Hawks' first run of the game on an error in the bottom of the third inning. The Hawks extended their lead to 4-0 in the sixth inning as Taylor Fought scored on a wild pitch, Will Cosby scored on a Grant Simera double and Simera scored on a Joseph Calvert single.

Millsaps answered with two runs in the top of the seventh inning to make it a 4-2 game before Huntingdon closed the scoring in the bottom of the seventh. Following a run by Headley, catcher Jud Owens tripled to score Wes Powell to make it 6-2.

Powell was the only Hawk with multiple hits and finished with two of Huntingdon's seven hits.
