Huntingdon scores 9 runs late to put away North Park

JACKSON, Miss. – The Huntingdon baseball team picked up a 13-1 win over North Park University on Sunday at Belhaven's Smith-Wills Stadium.

Huntingdon scored four runs in the middle innings to take the lead and put the game away with seven runs in the eighth inning and two runs in the ninth inning.

Trailing 1-0 in the fifth inning, Huntingdon took the lead with a three-run home run by Taylor Fought. The Hawks made it 4-1 in the sixth inning when Will Cosby scored on an error.

Still leading by three, Huntingdon sent 10 batters to the plate in the eighth inning. With no outs and the bases loaded, Joseph Calvert drew a walk to bring in the first run. An RBI single by Bradley Harris, a two-run double by Garrett Headley, an RBI single by Wes Powell and a pair of sacrifice flies by Fought and Garrett Breland blew the game open and put Huntingdon ahead 11-1.

The Hawks closed the scoring in the ninth inning when Powell drew a bases-loaded walk and a Fought single brought in the final run.

Fought finished the day 4-for-5 with the three-run home run, five RBIs and a run. Cosby was 3-for-4 with three runs, Headley had two hits, two RBIs and two runs and Calvert and Powell each had two RBIs and scored twice.

Harris had an RBI and a run, Breland finished with one RBI and Chris Fisher and Jud Owens each scored once.

Carden Mellown (1-1) was credited with the win. Mellown struck out five, scattered five hits, walked four and gave up one earned run. Freshman Ethan Hess struck out four, walked three and gave up four hits in relief.

Coming Up: Huntingdon plays at Millsaps on Monday at 4 p.m.

Schedule update: Huntingdon returns to Posey Field on Tuesday to play Elmira as originally scheduled. However, instead of one game at 5 p.m., the Hawks will now play a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
