Huntingdon opens series against Brevard with 7-inning win

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon baseball team set the tone early on Friday night and knocked off Brevard College 15-2 in Game 1 of a three-game series at Posey Field.

The game was shortened to seven innings by the USA South Athletic Conference's 12-run rule.

Huntingdon scored in all but one inning, building a 4-1 lead in the third inning and an 8-2 lead in the sixth inning. The Hawks put the game away with seven runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Joseph Calvert led off the bottom of the seventh with a solo home run before Wes Powell scored on a wild pitch and Taylor Fought scored on an error. A two-run double by Garrett Breland made it 13-2 before Calvert ended the game with a two-run double.

Calvert finished 3-for-3 with four RBIs and two runs. His home run was his second of the season. Will Cosby was 3-for-3 with two doubles,  two RBIs and three runs, Breland finished with three RBIs, two runs and two doubles and Dakota Beane had two RBIs and a run on two hits.

Fought finished with two RBIs and a run, Garrett Headley and Powell each scored twice and Logan Gildea and Jud Owens each scored once.

Carden Mellown (2-1) earned the win in six innings. Mellown struck out eight, walked four, gave up six hits and allowed two earned runs. Ethan Hess pitched the final inning, striking out three and giving up two hits.

Coming Up/Schedule Change: Huntingdon and Brevard were originally scheduled to play one game on Saturday and one game on Sunday, but due to the weather forecast, a doubleheader will be played on Saturday at Posey Field. Game 1 is set for 2 p.m.
