Huntingdon falls in extra innings at Piedmont

DEMOREST, Ga. – The Huntingdon baseball team gave up a run in the bottom of the 12th inning to fall to Piedmont 3-2 on Friday night in Game 1 of a three-game USA South Athletic Conference series.

Tied 2-2 in the 12th, with two outs and Piedmont runners on first and second, Piedmont used an RBI single to end the game.

Huntingdon led early and took a 2-0 lead in the sixth inning. An RBI single by Taylor Fought scored Garrett Headley in the first inning and a sacrifice fly by Will Cosby scored Wes Powell in the top of the sixth inning.

Piedmont answered and tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Huntingdon reliever Ethan Hess (1-1) took the loss in 4 2/3 innings, striking out three, walking one, scattering five hits and allowing one earned run.

Starting pitcher Carden Mellown went seven innings, struck out a career-high 12, walked four and allowed four hits and two earned runs. Mellown carried a one-hitter into the sixth inning. 

Powell and Joseph Calvert combined for five of Huntingdon's nine hits. Powell finished with three hits and Calvert had two hits.

Coming Up: Huntingdon and Piedmont will play Game 2 of the conference series on Saturday at 2 p.m. (Central).
