Huntingdon falls to Battling Bishops in Rd. 1 of USA South Tournament

LAGRANGE, Ga. – The fourth-seeded Huntingdon baseball team came up short in a 4-2 battle with fifth-seeded North Carolina Wesleyan in the opening round of the USA South Athletic Conference Tournament on Wednesday.

The Hawks (18-17) will play eighth-seeded William Peace (17-17) in an elimination game on Thursday at 10 a.m. (Eastern) at Point University's West Point Field.

Huntingdon scored first against the Battling Bishops, taking a 1-0 lead when Jud Owens drove in Taylor Fought with an RBI single. North Carolina Wesleyan tied the game with a run in the top of the second and took a 2-1 lead with a run in the top of the fourth inning.

In the bottom of the fourth, Owens scored on an RBI single by Chris Fisher to tie the game 2-2. The Battling Bishops took the lead for good with a run in the fifth inning and added a final run in the seventh inning. Huntingdon was unable to answer, reaching base just twice in the final five innings.

Owens finished 3-for-4 and was the only Hawk with multiple hits.

Carden Mellown (6-3) took the loss in 7 1/3 innings.

Coming Up: Huntingdon returns to action in the USA South Athletic Conference Tournament on Thursday at 10 a.m. (Eastern) in an elimination game against William Peace at Point University's West Point Field.

The winner will advance to a 5 p.m. (Eastern) game at LaGrange's Cleaveland Field against either Piedmont or LaGrange.
