Huntingdon beats North Park on Day 1 of Moe’s BBQ Smokin’ Classic

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon baseball team scored 14 runs in the final three innings to blow open tie game and beat North Park 16-3 in seven innings on Friday night.
The game was the final game of the first day of the Moe's BBQ Smokin Classic at Posey Field. Spalding University beat second-ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater 8-5 in the first game. In the second game of the day, Whitewater beat North Park 13-1 in seven innings.
Huntingdon (4-0) put together its best offensive showing so far this season in the win over North Park (0-2). In addition to a season-high 16 runs, the Hawks also had a season-high 17 hits.
Center fielder Heath Haskins drove in five runs and was one of six Hawks with multiple hits in the game. Haskins finished 2-for-4 with five RBIs and a run. Andrew Knight was 3-for-4 with three runs and an RBI and Chris Fisher was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs.
Wes Powell and Danny Coleman Jr. each finished with two hits, two runs and an RBI. Will Cosby had two hits and two runs, Colton Clark had an RBI and a run, Ryan Meadows, Bradley Harris and Jake Elrod each scored one run and Hunter Long had one RBI.
Huntingdon trailed 2-1 early before tying the game in the bottom of the third inning, taking the lead in the fourth inning and putting the game away in the sixth inning.
After an RBI double by Haskins made it a 2-2 game in the third, Knight scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch in the fourth inning. The Hawks scored three runs in the fourth and added two runs in the fifth to make it a 7-2 game.
In the sixth inning, Huntingdon sent 13 batters to the plate, put together eight hits and scored nine runs.
Jacob Munn (1-0) earned the win in 1 2/3 innings of relief. Munn struck out two and walked one. Starter Carden Mellown went 4 1/3 innings, struck out three, walked three, allowed six hits and gave up two earned runs. Logan Gildea pitched the final inning for the Hawks.

Coming Up: Huntingdon will host the final day of the Moe's BBQ Smokin' Classic on Saturday. Spalding and North Park will begin the day at 11 a.m., followed by Huntingdon and second-ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater at 3 p.m. Huntingdon and Spalding will close out the tournament at 7 p.m.
